I think something going for CarPlay (and I assume Android Auto) is that in the past most vehicles required a physical connection to the phone to work. But in the last couple of years, a bluetooth connection has been possible, making it even more seamless to just sit in your car and have CarPlay (or Android Auto, I assume) automatically load up without having to plug your phone in.

I still hope Sync 4A is a better system though, would rather not use CarPlay and just stick to the MME’s built-in system to control everything.
Having nothing else to do when I sat in a Mach-E at one of the roadshow stops, I paired my phone with it and tried Android Auto: once Bluetooth pairing was done, I started Android Auto manually on my phone, clicked through the acknowledgments on a couple of screens and Google Maps appeared on the vehicle's screen. For subsequent connections, initial handshake was completed over Bluetooth, then it went over Wi-Fi. When I deliberately turned off Wi-Fi on my phone to see what would happen, it disconnected from the vehicle but Android Auto turned it back on and reconnected.

My van supports Android Auto and CarPlay over USB only. It has all the hardware needed to operate over wirelessly, but during its development no production vehicle offered that feature and when it went into production only a couple of vehicles supported CarPlay over Wi-Fi and none supported Android Auto over Wi-Fi. Honda could have added it later through OTA updates, but as any typical traditional automaker, it chose not to do so. I did not expect them to add any feature that was not there when I bought the vehicle, so I am not disappointed. I contributed money toward a crowdfunded project building a device that acts as the intermediary to provide wireless Android Auto on headunits that only support it over USB. Having to plug in is somewhat annoying for short drives, when all I want to do is to listen to music and maybe look at the traffic, but for long trips I need to keep the phone charged anyway. Once I receive that crowfunded device, I will finally be able to enjoy the Qi charging pad in my van while Android Auto is running. When folks complain about the USB cable, most don't realize the superior audio quality it offers: playing music over Bluetooth A2DP uses sub-band coding capped at 345 kb/s, it is full 16-bit stereo PCM (although purists may argue those FLAC tracks on my phone, originally ripped from CDs, are upconverted from 44.1kHz to 48kHz). It doesn't matter when road and wind noise is high, but even I can appreciate it when listening to music while parked, which is something I do a lot as a parent with young children.

During a trip two years ago I went through three different rental vehicles, a Malibu, a Equinox, and an X5. Infotainment and navigation was the worst in the BMW, despite it being an upscale vehicle, while the other two showed the same Android Auto interface as if I was driving my own car. On another trip, I arrived at 1AM on the West Coast, picked up a Mustang at Avis, plugged in my phone and was able to use Google Maps instantly without having to spend any time on figuring out the infotainment system.

When Apple and Google got into this game some automakers embraced them, others were reluctant, a couple were outright hostile. Toyota, for example, resisted until the 2019 model year. It's a matter of how to monetize the data gleaned. I don't blame them for not wanting to just hand it over to those two companies, but they are at a disadvantage anyhow, as drivers spend more time with their phones than their cars. Obviously privacy is a trade-off, but Google Maps has a much better chance at guess where I want to go next, even before I ask for directions, because it knows where I went yesterday (or a week ago) around the same time, what I have on my Google calendar, which places nearby I frequent, where do I drive to the most often from the current location, or that last night I looked up a particular Ford dealership to check on its current inventories.

If people are already waiting for like 9 months and need to wait another 3 or what and they cancel now they didn't want to REALLY buy it in the first place. Waiting is already 75% over now, if you can hold that long you should be able to wait another 3 months.

I've had 3 drive-along experiences around 10-15 minutes each and it was awesome! Too bad they didn't let me drive it myself
I’m jealous! 3 ridealongs? I’ve only seen static displays. For all I know, the vehicles I’ve seen didn’t even have drive units ???

Not living in an area where they've even done the road-shows... the only time I've even seen the car was when I occasionally catch a pre-production mule driving around town (living in Dearborn we sometimes see these things). I've never seen one up close ... much less ridden in one.

But my dealer did tell (they've been instructed by Ford) to invite each customer who has already placed an order to get to take the demo car home for 1 day. Also the demo car isn't to be offered to anyone else until everyone who *has* placed an order has had their chance to drive it.

So I should get a chance to drive it before my car shows up. But this is all based on the assumption that the dealer's FCTP car ships ahead of the retail order cars ... I don't know if that's still a safe assumption. If not, my car and the FCTP car could show up on the same truck.

I thought waiting would be easier. It's not. Many people not in as good a position as myself can't afford to wait because they need a vehicle and hoped to do it in a certain timeframe, now delayed. I'm lucky I don't need a car, I just want a car.

You sound incredibly privileged to have had a chance to actually see and ride in a vehicle, something available to only a rare few. I applaud your luck.

I will wait, because to me it's extremely important to set an example on stopping climate change and encourage the uptake on electric vehicles. They're really hard to get and too expensive, but if we can move the needle towards wider adoption, they'll become more accepted, available and affordable. Thanks to everyone on here, because you're all making that future possible.

Extremely well said. I agree on EVERY point. I live in Cali and the gas prices here are obviously the highest in the nation. Most of that is due to the strict clean air. I have said for years that California cannot clean the entire world. Adoption of electric is truly the ONLY way that there will be an earth for a great great grandchildren to have.

I do not care about all of the tech guys on here saying how it is inconvenient to take long road trips in a BEV so they are going to use ICE. My position is that I agree on that aspect but the reality is that a little inconvenience goes a LONG way to full adoption and a better world. Which is more important?? A little longer drive so that our kids get to have a world that they can live in or do we need to be selfish and thing of ourselves only???

I am looking forward to the road trips just to see what I can do and play with the trip itself. Kind of like a video game. I went this past week to visit my son in the navy and his wife in Seattle. I drove my Explorer form Bakersfield to Seattle non stop. It took 16 hours due to stopping through drive thru only and gas stops. that was it. Now I have a personal basis of the length f the journey and the cost was $450.00 round trip. Both took roughly the same time. When I get my MME I am going to do it again and test all of the above. my average speed was 80 MPH

My only annoyance is the timing in my personal situation. As an educator I can completely appreciate the craziness that COVID has caused and don’t fault Ford for any delay.

I’m just disappointed that it most likely won’t work out for me. Just the cherry on top of the year...
Home construction? COVID delayed so we have to move into a short term lease the day after Christmas and then move again in a few months.
Last BEV lease up in November? Get a loaner and wait it out only to have the MME pushed back even further until probably February for delivery now (thanks @trutolife27 LOL).
At least have a peaceful holiday season? Mom diagnosed with cancer in her brain on Christmas Eve.

Was hoping something could go right this year but that’s a lot to ask under the circumstances.

I just pinged my dealer and they said demo units should be in "anytime now". Since my ETA is 1/29, hoping I get to test drive prior to me taking delivery. Not like it's going to change my mind but something to do while I wait. ?

Dont know your gas prices but we pay 1,679 EUR for 1 Liter EURO-95 fuel (average today's pricing)
1 Liter = 0.264172052 US gallons
1,679 EUR = 2,0617 US dollar
Which makes 7,80 USD for 1 Gallon.

About the highest gas prices in the nation, I believe Hawaii takes that honor, @Kamuelaflyer would know. In LA, regular unleaded is currently in the low $3’s a gallon.

Sorry about you mom but maybe the bright side with delay is that you aren't saddled with a payment during all these rough times. I am using this delay as time to save up for a larger down payment and also contemplate should I really get it. Hope your mom gets well

Yeah, Europe has been WAY more costly for gas for decades now.

We usually fill up at Costco near my house. $1.93/gal right now.
