Starting Jan 1, 2020 Ohio will raise plate fees :

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Starting next week, owners of of hybrid and electric vehicles in Ohio will owe more money when they renew their vehicle registrations.

Starting on Wednesday, Jan. 1, higher annual registration fees — $100 for standard hybrids and $200 for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids — go into effect. That’s a substantial increase over current annual registration fees, which for passenger vehicles start at $34.50 and can run more, depending on where you live.

It is like $240 annually in Georgia for our Leaf....supposedly for a "road usage fee". I have a real problem charging this for EV's. Yes they avoid the gas tax road usage fee. I donlt have a problem pay a road use tax. But, it should not be a flat fee. Say I drive my EV 7000 miles a year and have to pay the $240. Someone else could drive their EV 20K miles and pay the same amount. At least with gas tax you are paying based upon your mileage (gas use.) Not so with Georgia's EV added tax.

While true, what's the practical alternative without trying to go through the likely impossible task of installing trackers in people's vehicles? (Which would let out-of-state visitors off for free, among a host of other problems.)

I agree that flat fees are too much for low-mileage drivers and too little for high-mileage drivers. But there's not a good alternative.

CO still only charges $50 extra for EVs as a road-funding replacement for the gas tax. That's well below average replacement value. I'll take the special treatment, of course, but it should really be raised to more closely mirror the road funding of other vehicles.

This eventually has to come everywhere as there is currently no mechanism to tax EVs for road maintenance expenses. It is only fair that all drivers pay towards road repair funds.

They should just charge this for all cars worth over a certain amount in addition to gas tax.

Hawaii. Regular registration fee + $95. The regular fee is based upon vehicle weight.

Ours are a combination. The main one is the motor vehicle ownership tax, based (I think) on vehicle value and maybe weight and #axles. But there's a list of about a dozen little flat rate things added to it.

Technically, ours are “What would this car’s registration be if it was an Ice car then add $50.” ICE car registration is based upon weight, then add $45. I simplified it. Until now. ;)
