Don't quote me on this, but I think it only started with the Model 3 in 2018? The S and X have key fobs for entry.
To be exactly accurate, July of 2017 with the first delivered Model 3s.

Except we now have a dealer saying they can't just add another key to the car without the original key being present.
That needs to be clarified. Maybe the dealer can't add another key, but at the very least, Ford should be able to provide one, if the original key got damaged or lost.

A message like that should come with a complimentary fob sent by overnight mail. What the heck those people were thinking? If enough people happen to be locked out of their cars and suffer financial or other harm a swarm of lawyers will be frantically filing class action lawsuits.

Were they "2018" models, or labeled as 2017?
Tesla doesn't play that game. It's a 2017 until Dec 31, 2017 . We got ours Dec 27, 2017

To be a little fair, Tesla has had over 10 years to work out the bugs. I think PAAK is new to Ford with the Mach. This is why some people never buy a first year model... How was PAAK on Tesla during it's first half a year?
Ford has had PAAK for a few years on the Lincolns. I have it on my 2020 Aviator. In a year of owning it I’ve never used the key fob. That’s right, I set up PAAK at delivery and have never had to use the fob. Switched phones in that year and no issues. Memory settings, approach lighting, etc. all work without fail.

This may sound sarcastic but not intended that way.

What exactly is the problem PaaK looking to solve for humans? In my industry we never create a feature or design requirement that does not fill a customer need.

considering the ubiquity of fobs, virtual lack of problems for people who carry them, and an assumption that lack of PaaK would cause 0.001% of buyers to not buy the car… Why would any car company waste energy on PaaK to begin with?

in addition, the interface for hardware and software for any car company using PaaK will never be fully in control because there are multiple operating systems, and phone hardware, etc that must always remain in compatibility.

Modern key fobs tend to be bulky, including the Mach-Es, so I prefer not to carry them.

As a side reason for me, I have two cars, and like always having the other's key fob in my pocket (along with house key). I never leave my phone without my house key (tied to the other key fob) and my phone, so I can always decide which car to get into outside/not have think to go change key fobs.

One day I would like to not carry any credit cards, house keys, ID, key fobs, and have just my phone for all of this.

One day we'll have an RFID chip in our forearms that will unlock all doors and start all devices (a utopia for some and nightmare for others ?). I would be happy if my car could recognize my face and brew me a fresh coffee ?.
Until then people are happy to consolidate everything on their phones, because they carry them anyway. There is, of course, the other side: lose your phone and you lost everything.

@ARK and @RedStallion, completely understand how the PaaK feature is a convenience and desired feature for customers such as yourselves.

I look at it from a product design and management standpoint where it presents so many problems to the manufacturer that is outside of their control, I would advocate against it if I was on the Mach E development team.

Hi amoo3, We are so glad to have been able to help you with this. We are hearing that this has been resolved and you should now be able to set up Phone as a Key. If you need any further assistance now or in the future please feel free to reach out. Thank you for being part of the Ford Family. ?
Hi, this is not resolved yet. The “add PaaK” option is back on my app, but it is stuck at the “trying to connect” screen and keeps hitting “connection trouble”.
I also can’t add my paak in the car because it is unclickable. I still do not have my fob.

I got a message late yesterday saying “All Phone As A Key access and Backup Start Passcodes were removed from [ (2021 Mustang Mach-E)] due to Master Vehicle Reset. A vehicle key fob is required for operation.”

I happen to be road tripping and did not bring the FOB with me since I figured with the phone and with the backup passcode that’s two methods to start the car.

Last night after getting the message my PaaK did stop working but I was still able to start via passcode. I have two days left in my road trip so parked it at the nearest Ford dealership overnight and heading there soon to see what we can do.
Anyone had this problem? Is there any way to get back on the road without a fob?

I had the same thing come up. I'm fortunate that I've not set up the phone as a key yet. Car's only about a week old and I'm relying on my fob for a while. Just wanted to let you know you're not alone on the message.

When I first got my M3 I decided against the fob. The cards can be self-programed in the car, and I have two spares. The only time anything ever let me down was when my phone wouldn't proximity unlock the car. But the app itself worked as did the card (which I always carry). This happened once. In two and a half years. It sounds like someone at Ford was over-thinking this nexus.
