Wait - if the vehicle has an internal Ethernet connection (via USB), why are dealers doing updates through the very slow OBD II connector? That seems stupid (paging @ChasingCoral - I just said something was “stupid” again! ?????)
Not all of the modules are ethernet connected.

Booked my appt for next Thursday (3/31). That should give them enough time to get things squared away (though, I had a bad modem in my car originally, and they had everything to diagnose and replace it anyway).

Many software updates are done using the USB. I've seen techs installing software in Marlin this way. Here hard drives, laptops, and special diagnostic tools are plugged into both the USB under the main screen and into the OBDII.

Cool, thanks. Remember, I live in Pennsylvania - I believe the dealers here use a quill pen to manually transcribe the updates into the modules ? (my dealer supposedly only has one person who knows how to update EVs and they’re a huge truck dealer. I’ve no idea what they’ll do when the lightning ships ?)

Oh? I did not know that. I thought everything was connected (directly or indirectly) to the GWM (I keep seeing it described as the vehicle “router”)?

Your dealer has a modern charger? My dealer just has one of the ancient chargers for the Focus Electric and it’s usually ICED anyway ?

My dealer has a pair of old FFE chargers. Fortunately, they do keep them accessible unless a customer parks in the wrong spot.

This photo is from work being done on Marlin in Naples Florida.

You may want to have a conversation with your dealer to ensure that they have read the TSB and that they have the special tools required to complete this repair.

I find the comment about the dealer who only has one qualified EV tech to be laughable. Running updates on these cars is hardly rocket science if you have the proper tool (VCMII/III) and the FDRS software, which why would a dealership not have these? The software shows you exactly which updates the vehicle needs, and even provides step by step instructions during the update where needed (APIM is a good example). In other words, if I can figure it out, the dealership should also. That's just an anti-EV copout on the part of the dealership in my opinion...

I've half considered buying these things on Amazon and leaving them in the driver's seat when I drop it off.

Service scheduled for Monday. We'll see how it goes.

EDIT: I bought them. There will be a goodie bag for the service techs when they get my car.

I cannot see any other reason why the covers need to go off for updates actually.....
The APIM’s user accessible USB port specifically does not allow external Ethernet devices to connect and get an assignment from the system. I actually might be the oddball here in that I tried that.. Months ago… LOL. Regardless, this “hidden” port DOES! Which opens the door to the fix and possibly to others tinkering more than they should.

Here's the official fix for all those stuck at Power-Up 1.7.1:

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 22-2117 22 March 2022
Ford Power-Up Software Update Failure Message And/Or Unable To Update The APIM Or TCU With The FDRS And USB Drive - Module Recovery

Issue:
Some 2021 Mustang Mach-E and F-150 customers may report experiencing a Ford Power-Up software update failure message via the vehicle display and/or FordPass. In addition, some technicians may experience the inability to update the accessory protocol interface module (APIM) or telematics control unit (TCU) using the Ford Diagnosis and Repair System (FDRS) and Universal Serial Bus (USB) drive. It may also be observed on the PTS - Over The Air (OTA) dashboard that multiple APIM and/or TCU updates have failed, or a no OTA history message is displayed. This may be due to a internal software error. To correct this condition, follow the Service Procedure to recover the APIM/TCU.

Action: Follow the Service Procedure to correct the condition on vehicles that meet all of the following criteria:

See attached PDF for the full procedure. Your dealer will need the listed adapters and cables to perform the fix. Remind them to update their FDRS software to the latest version before attempting, outdated software may cause the procedure to fail. The technician will need both the USB and the ethernet adapter ready to go depending on what the computer instructs during the procedure.

NOTE: Figures are labeled immediately above, not below. I've fixed the pagination in the PDF so it makes more sense. Your dealer might be confused if they print it off the default way.

Access to the APIM USB cable behind the console side cover is required, it appears this is done to bypass the USB hub built into the port. The hub before the APIM may have caused technical difficulties during the original procedure, hence this TSB is the workaround.

Console side cover removal:

Remove the green cover, remove the bolt. Pull outward (3 clips to undo) then rearward on the panel to remove. Install in reverse.
Sorry for the ignorance, trying to understand this just in case I need to explain something to the dealership, you just never know.

Why the difference between Fig. 3 and Fig 6? Do you do this process either with USB or Ethernet, or does the process involve doing it with both USB and ethernet.

7. The FDRS will prompt installation of either USB or ethernet cable connections based on the failure detected.

Just get a second USB to ethernet adapter. One for the laptop and one to connect per the TSB.
My conclusion is that they very specifically want it to be via Ethernet from the computer. Otherwise, they'd let you just do everything via USB.
