I'd march right over there and demand my car back in person, and make scene if they refuse. They're asking for it here. Start yelling for the manager in front of everyone. Get in and drive it away if you have to.

EDIT: Maybe they damaged something and are stalling.
I think you inspired him ... this is what he just texted me saying he's doing!

TLDR: EXTRA BEEFY Mach N Cheese is back safe and sound at our hotel after its vacation alone. I only drove the car a little bit but it seemed just as peppy, and I didn't notice any jail bars. Will have to do some more seat time before any other conclusions. Will have plenty of that on my drive back tomorrow morning.

Okay, so inspired by @Mach-Lee I marched over there in my Ford Explorer rental car and walked into the service desk and said "I want the Mach N Cheese with extra beefy junction box especialle right now!"

Ford Mustang Mach-E 😭😭😭 POST BATTERY CONTACTOR RECALL -- FIRST JUNCTION BOX FAILURE 😭😭😭😭 IMG_0558

This is where the magic happens at Bob Wonderies Ford. Think they have to rename their Lube Center -- photoshop, anyone?

The service advisor in front of me said, "hmmmm let me check on your car, it looks done but not closed out." He called my "advisor" named Emannuel, who explained on the phone that he still had to do "paperwork".

So I was asked to wait for Emannuel. After 10 minutes and no car I found the service manager and started asking him where my car was. Just then, Emannuel walked up and started whimpering, explaining to his boss and me that the problem was:

That I did my own software update and the tech had no idea how to close out and document that the software recall campaign was completed because he could not flash the required software onto my car because it was already on there. The advisor said they called Ford to have them clear the recall campaign, and that he could not release my car until then.

I told him I wanted my car back, and that the recall software is on my car (which he agreed to). They ended up giving me my car back without any paperwork, which the dealer claims they will email me when the recall campaign is closed for my car and they can close out the work order.

Emanuel asked many times how I was able to flash the software myself and how this was legal, etc. I gave up after a short amount of time so long as they gave me my FOB and brought the car around.

@Mach-Lee or someone else -- do you have the workshop instructions for a dealer tech to use to perform the software recall? Does it specify that they must flash a certain version of software, or that they must verify the latest updates for several modules are on the car?

This is a potential gap in Ford's recall instructions and understanding of its customers. It is insane that I was kept another day in SoCal because this dumb dealer couldn't figure out how to notate that my car had the recall software on it. And also because they couldn't figure out how to communicate and be transparent with me about it.

Which means it's not a fix as I've said for months. It's still an underdesigned part and should be replaced.
I agree 100%. I think Ford just does not want the expense of dropping the battery and replacing the defective parts. I would not take my car on any extended trip.

That's wonderful that you got your car back, hopefully this issue never crops up for you again.

It's lame that they delayed so long in giving it back.

But I do give them the slightest bit of slack for not knowing what to do with a self-updated car in FDRS. It's sort of like a grey market purchase, not disallowed, but also not totally sanctioned either.

(( please let there be video... please let there be video... ))
I was about to -- but I thought I would try and be nice first but insistent. I thought shoving a phone in their face videoing the interaction wouldn't be productive.

It's totally sanctioned! Ford sells licenses to FDRS to individuals like me, there's absolutely nothing illegal or below-board about it. This dealer could see every record about my car including that i did the recall software update myself on June 28th. They were just clueless about what to do to note that the recall had been performed.

IDK, grey market implies illegal or against regulations. Here, Ford Motor Company through Motorcraft sells FDRS licenses to owners under a "DIY" category. I think it is impressive that Ford allows owner DIY access, not many other companies would allow that kind of access.

Having legally sold the license to us, I would say the problem is a failure of Ford internal communications and practices. But, I wouldn't want to make them regret allowing owners to buy DIY licenses, just fix the internal problem Ford.

Also, I think at the very least, they should give us FDRS DIYer's financial credits towards future Motorcraft purchases or software licenses when we do our own updates, that otherwise would have been billed by a Ford dealer.

They could have always updated the modules again in the vehicle history if they wanted to. I think the service techs just don't like that we know more about the cars than they do because it's intimidating. Ford's not talking to them, and they're not used to having to talk with Ford like this is my guess.

I kind of feel like I have been watching movie for the last couple of days by just following this thread.

Good luck on your ride home tomorrow @scoopman !
