Or, the economy will crash hard, EVs will be an expensive luxury, and the EV market will stall.

?The times, they are a changin?
That's a very likely scenario. The economy is in bad shape indeed. Also too many players and too much investments thrown into an untested market fueling irrational speculation. There will be an inventory pile up, fire sales, and companies going out of business. Lots of taxpayers money will be wasted too. In a few years they will realize that the actual demand is smaller than anticipated and EV investments will shrink. I'm personally not invested in the EV hype, I'm rather putting my faith in oil and gas.

Hm...I wasn't

We're you Abe to choose your model when reserving? I didn't get to choose....It just said that those details would be finalized with the dealer when actually ordering. I'm wondering if I missed a box somewhere :)
Initial reservations were 'Exclusive' reservations. You were able to pick your trim and will be one of the first to place an order for initial production.
Ford Mustang Mach-E MME vs Chevy Blazer EV 1658255216752

Looks like the exclusive reservations are now full.

As opposed to the Ioniq 5 which is retro-futuristic looking and comes out looking a little weird?

... But if we end up swapping to one I want it in black so I can put a great '80s pac-man wrap/magnets or similar on it.
Yeah add the Ioniq 5 and the BZ4X too.

I just like Ford's designs for Mach E and Lightning better than Blazer EV and Silverado EV.

They look like normal attractive cars/trucks. Like you couldn't even tell they were EV's if someone didn't tell you.

Finally got to watch the commercial. Best thing about the commercial was my man Daniel Suarez at TrackHouse Racing. Disappointed we don’t get to see Daniel beat the hell out of the thing. I am in the #NoTaBlAzEr camp though, but every ”Blazer” built since they shrank it to a mini truck platform is #NoTaBlAzEr. ??

I’m gonna have to make my ‘72 Blazer a lighted grille emblem though. That’s pretty cool. ??

Ha!

Cars are funny things. The only EV I've liked the looks of is the mach-e. As for the Blazer, I still just can't get past the fact that it's a car now. And a butt ugly one too. #notablazer.

This is also why they make more than one type of car, everyone has a different perspective. :)
Don’t get me wrong in all seriousness I like the looks of the Mach E but wish it was more SUV like. When Ford does an electric Explorer I will be all over it.

How long until the charge port doors break off supporting a 350kw DCFC cable? Seriously, this obsession to have hidden charge port covers with slick movements is just stupid - how resilient are the mechanisms over the life of the car?

From the article on Carscoops.com:

"Regardless of which trim is selected, all Blazer EVs come with a powered charging port door that automatically opens when pressed. Designers paid special attention to the charging port door as they noted owners will be using it far more often than a traditional fuel filler door, so they wanted to make it as convenient as possible to open. "

I guess I prefer that approach to the Mustang's "fuel door that looks like it was repurposed from a F250" that we got? It doesn't seem like Chevy over-designed it for the sake of over-designing it, but actually did it for a reason.

Yeah, why FWD in a car without a big heavy motor up front over the front wheels? Is there some other advantage to FWD besides traction?

And I have to say, I was a never a big Chevy Blazer fan. I think I’m still not.
What seems particularly unusual to me is that both RWD and FWD will be possible to configure. Makes sense to have AWD as an option, which they do, but I don't think I've ever seen a vehicle come with all three of those layouts as being possible.

Probably could have saved themselves some engineering bucks and gave the car a bit more performance bona fides by not including the FWD option.

Has some nice features over the Mach E (like ventilated seats, slightly faster charging, sun roof) but I'm just not digging the look of it. I think the Mach E looks a lot better. This looks like most other EV's like the EV6, ID4, Bolt, etc. They try to make them futuristic looking and just come out looking a little weird. The Mach E looks sleek and sporty and not too futuristic.

Plus I get to drive my Mach E right now and not wait 2 more years.
GM clearly went to school on the MME. But Fords lead to market of 3.5 years is surprising to me. the second gen MME will be ready by the time the 1st gen Blazer comes out.

I think they have a lot of runway before hitting an EV ceiling, particularly if prices keep coming down for batteries.

For a huge percentage of people, I think EVs are just a better option, even if we are totally indifferent to climate change and all that.

I'm mainly thinking of commuter vehicles for people who live in single family housing. Like if someone is considering purchasing a Blazer next year, and they are likely to keep it for 10 years and drive 150,000 miles with it, basically all around town and day trips - a $52,000 FWD Blazer RS EV would probably be a more enjoyable and economical ride for them instead of a $42,500 FWD Blazer RS ICE.

For a rough comparison, the EPA website says the 2022 FWD Blazer RS ICE will cost $3,150 a year in fuel, while a Mach-E ER RWD (trying to pick a close comparison) would cost $650 a year in electricity, these numbers based on 15,000 miles driven a year (see here for the fueleconomy.com comparison).

If the Blazer EV's efficiency numbers are similar to the Mach-Es, that would be a spread of about $31,500 in gas for the FWD Blazer RS ICE over 10 years versus $6,500 for the Mach-E RWD ER in electricity over that same time, with 15,000 miles driven a year.

As more people figure out how much cheaper an EV is to run compared to an ICE, to say nothing of the silent ride, and great low/mid performance an EV provides, a ton of people will want to switch to EVs.

I too am confused by the Ultium platform. I thought it was an 800v architecture? With all these releases being 400V, Kia/Hyundai look even further ahead of the times than they did earlier on in the game.
Hummer, Silverado and Sierra are all 800V/350kw charging. The smaller models are 400V/190kw charging. The GM charging curves generally hold out to 55-60%, then taper linearly. No short burst 150kw like the Mach E.

GM is also using heat pumps and they have battery preconditioning when navigating to the charger.

I agree the times are a changin... but I see a different change.

  • EV's are ~doubling in volume every year. Good economy or bad, the tipping is beginning.
  • THE aspirational car for younger people is the Tesla model 3... let that soak in for a minute.
  • EVs are (for better or worse) perceived as luxury things. Some luxury things do well in down turns while the middle market gets crushed.

The EV market in China is ~32%
The EV market in Europe is ~23%
The EV market in the US is puny ~4% but the growth curve matches China and Europe

It depends on the severity of the "downturn", doesn't it? I hope you are right, and we are in for nothing more than a mild cyclical downturn. But things could get much worse this time.

Look at what's happened already. How long has the chip shortage persisted? Wasn't it supposed to be fixed by now? General Motors just announced they have 95,000 brand new cars parked around the country waiting for parts before they can be finished and sold. Car dealerships have experienced empty inventory lots. Did you ever think that would happen? In post-WWII America?

Maybe it will all work out fine. If not, electrifying our personal cars will be the least of our problems. Meanwhile, an electric Mustang in the hand is worth two electric Blazers in 2024. Or 2025. Or...
