Rear Tailgate Lift Not Fully Opening

I have a 2023 MME, and one of the quirky behaviors I cannot figure out is sometimes when I push the button to open from the outside, it will rise about one foot and stop. I then have to push it again to fully open. It does not do this every time, but it is more than 50% of the time. I have tried using the height adjustment button, but that does not seem to have any affect. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and if so, have you figured a way to address it? Thanks.

Yes, many 2023 owners are reporting the same thing. Let’s hope Ford can fix it with a software update.

That makes me feel much better! I thought I was going crazy. My navigation sometimes just comes on for no reason as well! Thank you for the prompt response!

Same thing happens with my 23 MME. It's so random. One time after it opened only slightly I pressed the button again only for it to close. Very annoying

I have not had the variation. It seems this is a widespread issue. Just another software quark they need to iron out. Thanks for the reply!

The same thing happens in my '23 Premium RWD. I'm going to have it looked at when I take my car to the dealer on Monday to fix the rear hatch water leak.

This has been driving me nuts trying to figure out the pattern to this behavior. Also tried setting height adjustment and poring through the settings looking for "useless button push to raise it 12 inches". 23 GT. Have never had this happen on my 21 Premium.

I have noticed that if I have the driver's side door open the lift gate works fine when pushing the rubberized button on the lift gate. If the driver's door is closed and locked the lift gate will have the problem of intermittently opening 3 inches or so and stop. Would other folks that have this problem mind testing this to see if this is the case... have your driver's side door open and see if it works correctly. It may help the Ford technical folks find the bug if this is the case. I had a 2022 MME Select with the comfort/tech package and never had this problem.

Interesting, it almost like it changes its mind and decides to be locked again or something. Did you verify it doesn't open without a key present?

is it a bug or a feature, this happened to me for some time. In my case, I learned that you manually set how much the hatch opens by just pushing it up to the level you want. After it's at the level you want you just push the close button and next time it remembers the max height.

I have the same problem and made a thread about it. The trunk liftgate feature is BROKEN on the 2023s - despite what Ford and others say. Please keep taking it in and try to lemon it out based on your state laws. Ford shouldn't be selling broken cars.

i wonder if this is ford's fix to the mystery trunk opening issue.

my new 2023 premium is consistent in the following:

• locked, no key present: trunk locked, no trunk opening on rear button press
• locked, key present: trunk opens ~3" on rear button press
• unlocked, key present: trunk opens fully on rear button press (driver's door open or closed)
• locked, key present: trunk opens fully on 2x remote trunk button press
