FORD TO OFFER COMPLIMENTARY TESLA SUPERCHARGER ADAPTER TO ELIGIBLE EV CUSTOMERS

JAN 31, 2024 | DEARBORN

Last year, Ford announced that its EV customers would gain access to Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada beginning in Spring 2024. As that moment approaches, Ford President and CEO Jim Farley said today that eligible Ford EV customers will soon be able to reserve a complimentary Fast Charging Adapter.

The Fast Charging Adapter will provide Ford F-150 Lightning, and Mustang Mach-E owners access to Tesla’s V3 and above Superchargers. Ford will start to transition to the NACS charge port from 2025, removing the need for an adapter for direct access to Tesla Superchargers.

For the latest on the BlueOval Charge Network – already North America’s largest public charging network before adding Tesla Supercharger access – click here.

All unmonitored terminals should be google pay / Apple Pay capable. In reality, all cc terminals should be.

I don’t pull out a physical card to swipe unless there is no other option.
These charging networks are each trying to build their own walled garden, which is why you need their app instead of just a card.
But, agreed there should just be a place on the front to wave a chip card or Google/Apple pay.

Yeah I’m getting kind of tired of all the EV apps and having to create accounts, and I don’t even really travel by vehicle outside in my 20 mile bubble.

All great, looking forward to receiving mine! That being said, I’m most interested in finding out whether these adapters can be locked or not. Would be really annoying to return from a much-needed rest break only to find that the car barely charged at all because someone unplugged the cord and took off with the adapter. No one should be able to unplug my car and run off with the adapter by simply pressing the big glowing button on my charge port. Sure hope they (or Tesla) really thought that through!
A2Z description of their adapter says:
Our adapter locks in while charging, ensuring no unplanned disconnections or thefts. Includes an interlock safety pin preventing accidental removal of charging connector while charging. Unplug it with authorization from your car, phone or charging station's control panel and with an active locking mechanism.
I can only assume they will all do that.

There are several reasons why charging networks use apps more often than not:

1) Margins on selling electricity if you're not the power company is razor thin. Having an app allows them to charge you in bulk and maintain a balance in your account, thereby reducing the cost of paying per-transaction fees.
2) Payment terminals are probably one of the least reliable pieces of hardware, for whatever reason. Most charging locations don't have canopies, exposing the terminals to crappy weather - making things worse.
3) Payment terminals are also notoriously expensive pieces of hardware, and needing to maintain a terminal per pedestal is pretty costly.

The payment terminal issue is bad enough that Ionity in Europe is looking to centralize the payment terminal at each charging location, so they don't need as many terminals in general.

I'm not saying the situation is ideal, but the economics of DC charging is very tricky.

Unfortunately, unlocking from your car could be as easy as pressing the button right next to the car port, not something inside the vehicle unless they figure out how to do that via software that it currently does not do.

v4 = yes (although I've not heard of any of these being deployed in the United States yet)
v3 = no
v2 = no and not CCS compatible so not available to us anyway (or so I've read)
v4 is live in Wilsonville OR...

^^^ This. For those of out in the spread out west, I think we'll be waiting quite a bit before we see many V3's and V4's available as backups for CCS
Yep. There's some around, but not much where it would be especially useful to me. Like US95 between Reno and Vegas... I-80 in Wyoming, and Green River UT.

Yeah that makes sense since public chargers don't really have anyone keeping an eye them like gas stations do.
Like that has stopped skimmers at gas stations?

Make it NFC/Tap to pay, most cards have them, most consumers in the EV segment have TTP.

Me too. Am
Planning a family reunion 650 miles and 5 states away in July. Have got range anxiety and knowing the Tesla Network could be available is awesome.

Would be wonderful to show the new MME to my family in PA. Can anybody comment on charging stations along I-81 in VA and up to Carlisle, PA?
I had a good experience with the EA network on the I81 corridor between Woodstock, Va and Harrisburg, PA last June. Tesla access would be great as additional options as there aren't a lot of other options other than in Hagerstown, MD
