Panoramic Roof has a big crack. Best to go through insurance for glass repair or will Extended Service Contract cover it?

I usually forget that I even have a glass roof on my Mach-E, but happened to look up and out the back of it recently and discovered a crack running from the center rear of the pano roof about a third of the way through the center of the glass roof. For anyone who has dealt with this, do we know if it would be covered by the Extended Service Contract I have through Ford or if I would be better off working through the glass repair clause in my insurance?

This happened to me a couple of years ago. They said something had hit the vehicle, charged me $1,750 for the part and $750 for the install. I was pissed, especially as they had to do the removal/install of the panoramic roof anyway as part of a recall that existed at that time.

I did not go through insurance.

What recall?

The windshield and panoramic glass reseal recall did not require the glass roof to be removed. The glass roof was repaired from the inside by dropping the headliner.

I thought the glass warranty was for 12 months and only covered stress cracks.

That’s the one, you’re right that they didn’t have to remove the panoramic roof. I believe they were refusing to do the recall unless I paid for the new pano roof, but said I wouldn’t have to pay for the install, then included (billed Ford) for the entirety of the recall work, then charged me $750 for the panoramic roof labor.

You are most likely going to have to talk to your insurance company. There's something in the new car warranty about covering stress cracks for the first year, but your profile suggests you have a 2021 - long outside that first year. I also really doubt your extended service contract would cover glass (but it never hurts to read it and see.)

Thanks! Guess I will check with my insurance.

Not covered by warranty or extended warranty unless stress crack within 12 months.

It would be covered by your comprehensive coverage if you have it, subject to its deductible. It’s not considered a windshield, so it’s not really glass coverage, like your side or rear windows.
The thing to think about is what effect a claim would have on your future policy rates. It may not be worth it if you have a high deductible. You can also see if your policy has a forgiveness clause, for either loyalty or if you’ve had no claims for a long time.
Good luck!

Peruse this thread:

The gist of it - roof is not covered under windshield warranty but it is covered under car warranty. Ford doesn’t like to pay for that repair. The dealer might insist it was a rock chip, not a stress crack or Ford might refuse to pay for it ( my case). I used the BBB process in the warranty manual and settled with Ford for $200 out of pocket. Process was easy and fast and all done on-line and with email.

Coming from the rear of the vehicle with no physical damage on the outside if the vehicle, I feel that this has to be a stress crack. I guess I will give your process a shot!

There seems to be varying levels of opinions/success on if insurance counts it under glass coverage or not. Here and other cars forums.

Personally my policy says “Windshield and Auto glass coverage”.

Not really sure what the roof is if not auto glass.

Does your "auto glass coverage" include a side window? If so, I'd hope it'd also cover a "top window"

windshield and glass repairs
Glass claims & windowshield repair

Windshield Repair and Auto Glass Service

Without actually calling I agree that it doesn’t spell anything out except windshield. But they keep saying windshield AND glass. Which I would at least try arguing all the non windshield glass in the car is the and glass? Right?

Yeah, my glass coverage in my insurance calls out all window glass, so I would assume that it would be covered, but they didn't have an option online to note roof glass, so I'm waiting for them to call me to discuss.

I just went through this. A stone/rock started a crack. I have "full" glass coverage on my cars and insurance did cover the replacement. Dealer ordered the glass and a local glass repair company did the install.
