Crazy, but my apartment building just activated a little over 100 chargers; every parking spot has one! They were installed over the summer, but it took months to get them all tested and turned on. A great holiday present. Noticed several people have gotten EV's as a result. (3 tesla 's, one polestar and my mach e)

That’s pretty cool. Definitely a chunk of change that apartment complex dropped. Wonder if there were some incentives or what the return looks like. Wonder what their power service looks like.

Also there has to be some load management going on with 100 chargers, no? Curious what type of speeds they’re kicking out when 20 people are charging let alone all 100. Guess it would be rare that even half are used at the same time for quite some time. Would be neat if the system could prioritize vehicles that are lower on % charge over those that are not.

Lots of questions on how this works at this scale but it’s also fascinating to me.

Hopefully, the charging spots will not get 'ice'd' very often.
Every spot got one. I imagine each unit has its own reserved parking spot, so the owner is the one icing the spot, if they don't have an ev.

This is the investment they all have to do. They prepared to do this on my mother in law condo that I own. The HOA only had to pay for the central distribution and load management systems and service upgrade, if needed. Then each unit would pay about $2K to have cables ran and a charger placed on its own parking spot. You would pay the charging rates from the operator, which had a moderate mark-up. I consider it essential for a building to do this type of stuff. But the board, with a bunch of retired folks from Georgia, voted it down. The condo is in the middle of Atlanta and this move alone blocks a ton of potential young renters and buyers.

How is billing for electricity handled?
They're EVgo chargers. You pay like you would anywhere else. Our building got a 1.1 million dollar grant from the electric company for this project. The building doesn't profit except for having cleaner air!

Yes, each tenant has their own spot, so icing is not a problem.

Not sure yet. They just activated them a few days ago and I haven't brought my car in yet. The building management had no idea as they're not involved. It's NYC, so I expect it to be on the high side.

This seems like the solution to the charging problem. I don’t know how apartment complexes aren’t going to end up having to do this.

Not a solution for street parking, but if lots of complexes did this would be a lot of the way there to removing charging issues for people.

Very cool to see it happening. And while they are not (I assume), imagine if stuff like this started to go up with V2G.

This is really nice for apartment dwellers. But, I feel badly that one of my first thoughts is that this is a lot of copper wire dangling in the air...waiting to attempted to be harvested by dumb, bad actors.

The building has 24 hour roving security guards in the parking lot and cameras as well. I don't think that will be a problem, but who knows... ?There is a security person in the picture I posted.
