If you’ve even wondered if you can fit a 10’ PVC pipe in the car - the answer is “it depends”…

The car is about a cm too short, even running the pipe diagonally from the drivers rear to the passenger front dash. It will technically shut, but it’ll shatter your windshield when it does.
Ask me how I know ?‍♂?

OMG, that sucks so bad. Sorry. I did the same thing to the rear hatch window on my old VW Golf loading a long 2x4.

I was told to hang a long pipe under the car. I opted to use my truck.

Yes you have to properly pad it up by the windshield. When I haul pvc I don’t but 10’ conduit pipe I do.

I think what ultimately got me was I had a 12” box in the trunk so the back end of the poles were a slight bit higher (and Pythagoras says the horizontal distance would therefore be slightly longer). Also, they were 1.5” pvc, so it hit the windshield slightly higher (and further back).

An expensive lesson, sadly

Understand. Sorry this happened.

It fits fine if you do it like Mark showed. I’ve done 10’ PVC and PEX for plumbing, it’s close but just fits.

I saw my share of this type of thing when I worked in a Lumber Yard…

I saw a roof of a pickup truck get smashed and the back window shattered when I put a load of lumber on it. I told him what would happen and it did. He looked at me and said, you told me so…

I hate to admit it, but I did the same. One pipe would have been fine, but the second put some pressure on the windshield and a few miles down the road, crack. The next time I managed to get it under the dash somehow so then it was no problem. How many cars this quick can haul a 10' pipe?

I see way too many trucks around here with the pole dent in the tail gate where they put a heavy object sticking out of ur car and don’t tire it down and the first bump they hit the poles raise up and smash back down on the tailgate.

We’ve all be the victims of unfortunate physics at one point or another

I had 8 pieces, that certainly didn’t help

Good to know. Sorry about the window.
Also, if you’re going to haul around heavy stuff like floor tile, remember to put the rear floor down on the low step, otherwise, … normal wear and tear.

I leave my floor low - too many trips to the store for bricks and soil. Plus, I like that things don’t roll out

I think one of the key things in this photo is the the front passenger seat is put way back. That allows for a greater angle so that you can go from pretty much corner to corner.

On my Volvo XC60 there was a really nice feature: the front passenger seat could fold forward, pretty close to 100%. There was a simple release that allowed this. It made hauling long(ish) stuff trivially easy.

@A-A-Ron, I'm really sorry this happened to you! Thank you for posting this PSA. It is very useful.
