There are a pair of jump cables behind a pull out panel in the front bumper. It looks like a tow hook access but isn't.
Those are not jump cables. They are the electric frunk release cables. They only function to release the frunk lid if the 12V battery is gonzo dead. They will not open the frunk lid if the 12V battery is low enough to make the car not function but still has some juice. ??

Thank you for clearing that up.
Possibly saved me some embarrassment.

I have read multiple statements and concerns about the strong possibility of the 12V battery needing replacement within 3 years. My 2022 Premium will hit the 3 year mark 10/2/25, but I currently have nearly 47,000 miles due to annual multi-state road trips and tri-state, I live in NY, weekend drives. However, I have taken my car for the 10,000 maintenance service just before the annual road trip for about 21,000 reward points, I am curious to know if those who have experienced the abrupt battery issues completed annual maintenance visits?

Thank you.
Yes, my 40K service was done in August. 12V battery died without any warning on Jan 1. Checking the 12V battery is not listed as part of the 10K routine service visits. Mine made it 3 years and 10 months.

Once you get all those error message and it does not boot clean or go in gear it is best to leave the drivers door open if you can and pull twice on the hood release before as you get out. Once the hood is open the hood release jumpers are not required. Battery died here 3 4 times every time I could get in and release the hood. I would try to start it it would spit a bunch of messages at me and then not go in gear. Alarming the first time as EV were new to me but once you have seen it it is not a huge deal. I have never tried the release jumper to date but the battery was just being drained it was not bricked. I understand the door has a small power supply to let you in at least once if the 12V is bricked. Double plug that hood when your in there. ;)

Does anyone know if all doors have this capacitor or just the one? If all 4 that should be at least 4 chances not to use the jumpers. The drivers door opened for me the car would just not boot clean. The first time I did close the door a few times but then could see it was getting weak and slow to open so I left it open. The dealer told me that is why the 12V battery was dead I left the door open. -30C blowing snow; right it has been open all night but there is no snow in the cab ? ?

Not part of the 20,000 either. Over 3 years here also.

12v battery is cheapest via RockAuto.

I have been told by two experts differing things - that they can see the 12v SOH, and that they cannot, but can see the state of charge.

I plan on having my dealership test both vehicles on their battery tester before my 3 year warranty expires.

And no, extended warranty does not cover 12v.

Do other EV's have this much trouble with their 12V's?

Yes. Even older Teslas (they switched to a proprietary lithium LV battery around 2022). But most others have a mechanical way to open the door with a metal key so it’s not as big of an ordeal.

It’s just the nature of lead acid batteries. They can fail without warning and there’s no good way to monitor the health of them other than just measuring the voltage. But voltage could read normal even when the battery is bad.

Yes. Rivian has a massive issue with 12v and their vehicles are newer. Get this: to change their battery, many claim it costs $750 at the Rivian service center. That and other ridiculous issues led me to cancel my R2 reservation. I wish them well, but what they’re selling is not for me.

I don't see why Ford Pass can't have an on demand 12V level readout function next to the battery charge range indicator.

Even if they did it won’t really help. The car already monitors it and will trigger a charge from the HV battery if needed.

There is no reliable way to assess lead acid battery health. The best you can do is monitor voltage. But the voltage can still read in the “good” range at rest even if the battery is bad. Lead acid batteries can and will fail suddenly and without warning, especially in an EV where you don’t get the usual telltale signs of a weak/slow cranking starter.

Every time I’ve had a car battery die….take it in, someone test it, it reads good! Drive around and it’s fine!

Drive for an hour or so, park the car over night, wake up the next day to a dead battery.

So yeah….battery test…not the most accurate thing.
