I just walked through a parking lot where there is an EVSE at a handicapped space. The car parked there not only was an ICE car, it had no handicap placard or sticker or plate. 😱🐩

To top it all off, most of the lot was empty. Some people have nerve. 🤬🐩

The EV charging in a handicap spot is confusing as it depends on the state laws as to whether the spot is reserved solely for those with a handicapped placard or ok to use by EV drivers while charging.

California says:
“ADVISORY: EVG-250.1 General. While there is no positive requirement to provide electric vehicle charging stations, when they are provided a portion of them should be accessible. When co-located with parking spaces, electric vehicle charging is considered the primary function of these stations, not parking. Accessible electric vehicle charging stations are not to be reserved exclusively for the use of persons with disabilities. They should not be identified with signage that would mistakenly indicate their use is only for vehicles with placards or license plates for individuals with disabilities.”

Spots like this could be easily challenged in many states if ticketed or towed due to having ambiguous signage.

We are unique creatures. We will spend an hour at the gym doing an intense workout but we want a parking spot right next to the entrance.
I enjoy the walk. I like to check out the other cars in the parking lot. Unless it's raining,

At the cost of a ADA violation, I would not risk the ticket. If it has the ADA symbol, I am not parking it it, period. If it was to a point of desperation, going to hang out at the car while it is charging. This allows me to move it is someone needs the use the ADA spot or talk to the cop and explain the confusing situation.

Yup, that spot is in violation since it has a “Reserved” sign.

EDIT: Special signage is still being developed for use on these spots. They should not be marked with the handicapped logo.

In my locality , handicapped parking with a charger requires you to be both handicapped and charging. The signs reflect this as well. Enforcement is another matter though.

Right. I know I don't get enough exercise (my smartwatch reminds me daily 🙄). So I park further away not only to try and prolong the inevitable door ding on my MME but to squeeze in a few extra steps a day. This does not mean the voices in my head do not protest however.

I just wanted to reinforce that this particular vehicle was not an EV and it also did not have a state-issued identifier indicating that it was allowed to use that space. There was also not a single space on the aisle in which the car was parked that was occupied. If the car was parked in the empty space on the other side of the aisle, it would have not been notable. Oh, and the car was still there almost two hours after I first spotted it. 🤬🐩

I’ve never seen such a thing where I live. Of course, where I live, they’re always careful to place EVSEs in the most inconspicuous, out-of-the-way parts of parking lots possible. There’s absolutely no reason you’d park in an EVSE stall around here, unless either your battery was dead flat and you were desperate for electrons, or you were driving a diesel dualie from the “tucky” part of the state and wanted to make sure you were unambiguously clear about where you were from (your vehicle would no doubt also be festooned with the appropriate signage and banners) 😀😀😀

I do know of a major medical center that has spaces expressly reserved for “alternative fueled vehicles” that are much closer to the entrance than the handicapped spaces. I always found that somewhat ironic.

Here you go: four out of the six charging spaces occupied by cars that have finished charging. And one of them, a MME, isn't even plugged in!

People are such a-holes. But we know that, which is why we need to get rid of free charging. Then the freeloaders will charge at home and there might be some capacity for those who actually need a charge.

Yep. I used to always seek out the closest spot too, even after spending 45 minutes working out every day. Then I got my Mach-E and have taken a liking to parking it out on the edge of the lot instead to avoid dings. Realized that make more sense anyway. More steps!
