Do you think it’s likely that the 5 second acceleration limit will change?

Likelihood of altering/removing 5 Second limiter?

Any for anyone that doesn't believe me, this is what 1000 amps (same current as GTPE) does to a kitchen knife and lawnmower blade:

Notice how it's glowing in less than 10 seconds. And the Mach-E busbar is smaller than that knife.

Shorting out a car battery is also going to be around 1000 amps:

Yes, hot, but 100% of the power is going to the knife in his video - nowhere else for the energy to get used up. If he connected one terminal to the knife, then the knife to a motor terminal, then the other cable to the other motor terminal, I’m assuming the knife would still get hot but not glow since the energy is being used up to spin the motor, no? (also assuming the motor can absorb all the energy he’s putting out) I’m certainly no electrical engineer so any input or corrections would be appreciated!

The video kinda explains why the HVJB can fail and weld shut. But it still doesn’t catch fire.

?

None turn into flying unicorns either. Does this prove the software prevents that as well?

Can’t use the lack of something as proof it exists.

I’ll add flying unicorns into the same hyperbole category as Mach Es catching fire. Feel free to come back and tell me I’m wrong if you run into either one of those things. ?

The software is designed to prevent component failure. But failure doesn’t mean fire (as we learned from the HVJB ).
The only reason I can’t argue with you is that after my Mach turned into a Unicorn it burst into flames and all that was left was ashes so I have no proof.

The 5-sec limit is in place to prevent warranty claims because of under-spec’d parts (HVBJB). And to prevent GTs from turning into the EV version of a rear-ended Pinto. ?? It ain’t going anywhere until the first redesign.

This will not happen with a “refresh.” It will require a scrapping of the current design of power handling and battery pack. That would be a Gen2 or Gen3 MME. ??

Model refresh when the Mach-E GT moves to 800V or 1000V.

Speaking of which, anyone know what were the advantages to Ford of making the MME battery 400V as opposed to 800V? Seems like the number of battery cells in series just needs to be double, but the resulting power is the same while the amperage is cut in half, no? Yes you need thicker insulation, but I presume that’s a lot less expensive than copper bus bars…..?

I presume I’m missing something, but I’m not sure what.

That’s a redesign not a refresh though.
Yep, that’s why I said it won’t happen with a refresh. Gen2 or Gen3 is when it will happen unless the bean counters keep it from happening. ??

I have it on good authority that a GT fire during late pre-production testing in AZ is exactly what prompted the eventual 5-sec limit, as well as the “unbridled extend” bs mode. Or, I’m totally full of shit, you pick ! ??‍♂

It's a melt down related protection. An aftermarket 'solution' is an aftermarket fire. Only the crazies who want to go out in a flaming ball of glory would install something that removes that protection.
"I know better than these engineers! It can handle at least 3 minutes solid. Watch this as I youtube my death and the death of a few others on the freeway. Follow me for more tips on exiting the genepool tonight!"

As others have said, Ford built an inferior product meant for very limited use, in order to hit numbers they couldn't sustain and then put a check in place to keep people from dying.

We should really figure out a way around that...

Shelby American is working on the hardware and software to make it happen. They're also going to improve the brakes and handling.

For those who call it “an inferior product”, inferior to what? A Model S Plaid? An E-Tron GT? An ICE mustang? It’s not inferior, it has limitations, all vehicles do. If the limitations are not unreasonable, and I don’t think they are, and they are there to keep us all from going up in a ball of flames, great.

I want to see what the next gen MME looks like, and operates like.
I am also in the skeptical camp that unlocking an extra two seconds of full power will cause a serious thermal event, and maybe the logic on that would require very specific circumstances, but it would make the trap speed much better, and the GTPE wouldn’t get gapped by a Model Y Performance on the quarter mile. That is the embarrassment of the car.
