My purse was stolen and in it was my Mach-E key fob (and iPhone, etc). Thanks to my Backup Start Code I was able to get home.
A replacement key is $300. Then it has to be programmed, which takes 1-1/2 hours and costs an additional $225, for a total of $525 for a replacement key fob. Gone are the days when you could go to the hardware store and have an extra car key made for a few bucks.

You can get a replacement key fob from a number of online sources for way less than $300. You will still have to pay dealer to program, but shop around multiple dealers, you may find one that will do it for less.

Those keys died in the 80s. Chipped keys are not cheap keys.

I bought a third key for my car. The idea was partially that in case I lost a key (which I’ve never done in my life, being the child of a hyper-paranoid master locksmith) I could just buy a key online and program it myself. It requires 2 keys to program a new key to the car, so having 3 is hedging against a loss. ??

Of course, the real reason I got the third key was because it was an F150 Lightning key and it has a frunk button. The geek in me needed that extra button. ??

If I lost my second fob I don’t think I would replace it. The fob is only useful when taking the car in for service anyways.

Mine cost $28 and I programmed it myself in about 2 minutes. Much less expensive to do this before you lose a key, rather than after.

I wish I was 100% PAAK. But I have to have a physical key to open the office. I'm definitely a weekend PAAK Guy!!

OP, don't pay Dealer prices!!! Simple search on Amazon. See if any of these Forum Gurus live near you that can program the key or hit up YOUTUBE.

Just to clarify some things:

- it does not take 1.5 hours to program. It takes less than 15 minutes for thr dealership to do it.

- your dealership charges $300 plus $225. That is outrageous.

- because of the potential for what you went through, some buy a 3rd fob before the need arises, and programs it themselves. I bought an OEM new fob for under $60, then programmed it. Never lost a key ever, but the cost is such that I wanted protection.

What the dealer (or a licensed locksmith) can do that you can't do yourself is ERASE keys before programming new ones. If the key was stolen from somewhere that the thief would have a reasonable chance of being able to use it on your vehicle (say, stolen at home/work, etc.), I would want the dealer to erase that key.

Instead of paying $80, pay $65. I bought the Lightning fob on sale for $56 during black Friday.
