This topic makes me very excited for the promise of less weight and more range from future battery tech. My average daily miles since getting my car is 58 and that is high because of summer road trips. Once those end, my daily miles drops to around 30. Taking a range hit for better performance/appearance/ride won't really bother me that much.

To sum up that article, when you replace your tires, always start your search for a tire with an eco-focus rating of some sort. Many brands have product offerings with a low rolling resistance, which is the ultimate goal.
I disagree. Low rolling resistance and range concerns are actually low on my list of factors. I am more interested in the best combination of safe handling in various conditions and ride quality. Iā€™m willing to sacrifice range for those.

Thank you. I like it too, but 90% of those that comment about it in the wild have no idea what it means. Then I explain it. Then I feel like an idiot for having to explain it. So, when it comes time for renewal I might change it up. We'll see.
I feel your pain!

Sooo when your MME is 7.9 years old, and you're trying to get a new battery from Ford. You should use worn out grippy tires for the >30% battery loss test !?!

I had my OEM 225 Primacys on my 2021 MME4x through the first 18k miles. Because tire options are so limited on the OEM premium wheels, I switched to 20" wheels, and a new tire size of 255/45/20 with Michelin Sport all season 4's by recommendation of the local Discount Tire. My summer range went from 270 to 230-240.

There are a ton of factors as this article described, but the lack of EV-minded tires within specific sizes is also a contributing factor to some choices being made.

Not to be anal, but, how do you charge at EA while backed in? EAā€™s cable isnā€™t that long though I never tried.

I stopped by a station that was a brand new installation, checking in to see if it was activated yet. We're sorely short on level 3 charging in my area so when this one popped up as in progress I checked it when I was in the neighborhood.

After I parked in and checked the screen I thought, "Man, @ChuckA would really appreciate a photo right now. He won't care that I wasn't actually charging." So I took the photo and posted it.

I was just bustin' chops. Thanks for being a good sport about my comment.

It's funny he makes a lot of the same points I have when people talk about efficient tires. He also mentions the Euro tire labels. I wish we would adopt euro tire lables here in the USA. On the label rolling resistance is rated A-E with a 2% difference in efficacy per letter grade.

So if you switched from a 225/55/19 A fuel efficiency rated tire to a 245/50/19 E fuel efficiency rated tire as I did you could quickly estimate the E Rated tire would reduce the range by 10-14%

I have had 4 different setups and currently have 18" CR1 wheels on a premium extended range AWD. If I had low rolling resistance tires I would be seeing 310-318 miles of range even on the highway. I have Euro "C" rated tires and am seeing 285 miles of highway range, 300+ city mile range

The worst I had was a set of 245/50/19 UHP all season tires and open (very bad aero) wheels the car had a highway range of a little over 200 miles.

All of us that live in the snow belt should take note that winter or even all weather tires are a better fit for an EV because the rubber stays soft at much lower temperatures.

One other factor that others have mentioned is when you switch tire size if you don't go with someone very very close to stock what your range and trip computer are telling you is wrong. Stock is 28.74" overall height

Optional tire sizes that will keep your trip computer and speedometer accurate are

225/60/18
245/55/18
225/55/19
245/50/19
275/45/19
225/50/20
245/45/20
275/40/20
315/35/20

I have also attached a photo illustrating how big of a difference wheels can make. I won't take credit for that one another user posted it on this forum

Brian, really appreciate the information....2 quick questions on your post.

- How does the AFree area relate to efficiency? Does fully covered give you 1.5% more?
- Also, love my Premium AWD EX but the ride is a little rough especially in town. My wife won't take it on a road trip. I adjusted the psi to 35 and it seems to help somewhat. Did you change from 19" rims to 18" rims for ride comfort and if so does it help a lot?

BTW...have had mine since the end of April and am averaging 3.7 m/kw...not being real careful but not a speed demon either.

Hello, 3.7 for a Premium ER AWD is very good. I am not as sharp on this as someone like Engineering Explained.

Here is a great video with the math on how it works.

I could not find the wheel curve per tire size for the MME but consider this the CR1 AWD and Premium AWD XR are mechanically the same cars but the CR1 AWD has about 13% more range. So switch to the CR1 wheels and there you go, get more efficient tires and you could go further too. The CR1 and Premium RWD have about a 3% difference in range so it appears wheel size makes a much bigger difference when you have AWD.

Now onto your next question is there a difference in ride quality and did I switch to improve it? Ride quality is very hard for me to measure. The switch to 18" was about highway range, any ride quality improvements were a bonus. I feel a difference and my wife says she noticed a difference and prefers the 18" wheel/tire combo. I did put grand touring tires on the vehicle so some of that difference could be the tire.

My advice on the ride quality question is to find someone local with a Select or CR1 and ask for a ride, or find a dealer that has a test model and take it for a test drive.
