Issue resolved!!
Thanks to @Pbaran for posting the solution. After moving my EZ-Pass to the area with black dots that is at the top of the windshield, I went for a drive on the Dulles Tollroad. It read the EZ-Pass. I got a signal at the toll both that the "toll paid" and I confirmed by signing on to my account where the transaction posted with the pass (and not the plate).
@ChasingCoral you may want to consider moving your small EZ-Pass up into this area since it makes the pass much less visible from the outside.
Which side of the mirror did you use, please?

Was talking to the NY EZ Pass customer service rep yesterday and we agreed that they could save folks (including themselves) a ton of hassle by mounting a tag reader connected to a screen in various places (maybe on toll roads?) so a person could just drive by and test their installation. Low cost, high info. Never happen.

Post a photo of the placement please.

is the ez pass a sticker?
No, it is a transponder in a plastic box that is held on with fasteners (two strips of hook and loop tape). I have the larger version that is called "Flex" because it has a sliding switch that you can use when you have a carpool.

@Pbaran Thanks! I'm going to give that location a try. I know that on my BMW I was instructed to *not* use that area. But, if it worked for a large SunPass I'm hoping it will work for a smaller EZ-Pass Flex.
@KAustin re the license plate tag - the monster that they use is really ugly and doesn't have the Flex feature. I discussed this with the EZ-Pass VA people. If I want to use it for Flex, I would have to call the DC toll lane company every time I wanted to get the HOV rate. For those not familiar with some of our toll roads in Northern VA, they are variable rate tolls and there's an exemption if you have an HOV vehicle. The rates routinely run into the $25-$30 range during rush hour. The Flex feature is important.
I really hope you get it to work on the windshield.

@ChasingCoral here you go.
@buffasnow passenger side. It doesn't really block the passenger's view because it's in the area that has all the black.

This is the same place where @Pbaran installed his SunPass.

Great to hear and I have dual residency which I’ll tag mine in Fl which requires no front plate. I was bumming to have to put a bracket on her just for the ez pass.

The documentation that comes with ours says it is designed to use the whole windshield as the antenna and won't work if its not stuck to the windshield. And if you remove it, it breaks it and has to be replaced.
That makes little sense. The windshield is electrically inert and can't act as an RF antenna. Even the windshields with the antenna built in use wires in a specific pattern with the glass acting as the structure to hold it in place. You don't want to put the sticker behind those wires as they will act as interference to the wires in the sticker.

With that said, I have an EZTag Sticker (Bancpass version) from Texas and I change vehicles quite a bit because of my job. I have put packing tape on the windshield side so I can move it from vehicle to vehicle. It's worked every time. Well, except for the time I had it placed way too high on the windshield but moving it down slightly fixed that.

Thank you Janitorjim I'll need one of those for my premium.
@janitorjim @rgparham have either of you gotten one of those NTTA license plate TollTag yet? Just curious what it looks like and how to get one. The phone rep I was talking too wasn't even familiar with it...

Anyone in the SF Bay Area try their Fastrak to see if it works with the windshield? I'm happy to test but if someone else has done it before me, that's great too!

I hear you, I am living in Fort Myers, FL and was wondering the same thing. Hopefully I do not have to go back to stopping at the toll booth every time I cross the bridge to Cape Coral or go through Alligator Alley . I do NOT want a front plate just for the SunPass.

I have not seen one. The information was on the NTTA tolltag FAQs

found this from 2018

Special Vehicle List for website.pdf (ntta.org)
Just got the NTTA TollTag from the local Plano office. They confirmed we don't need the licence plate mounted one after all! The customer service rep actually came out with a handheld transponder and tested the regular sticker one and got it to work. Key is placing the TollTag sticker in the dark area to the left or right of the mirror as that's not metallicized. She was able to detect it fine with the handheld once it was there.

So to add another data point. The carwash I have a monthly membership to has their own tag they add in your car, and it does not work through the windshield either. They have to come out and use a hand barcode scanner. 😒

Their tag can't go on the dark area because it has a barcode on the outside for if the reader is down.

According to the dealer training manual I found online, the front windshield on the Premiums, CA 1, and GT have an IR reflective film on them. I guess that’s why the transponders won’t work.
Now I know why I have been getting red lights the last few times...guess I will wait to get the tickets and bring them in with my transponder...now to order a license plate transponder...
