$99 a month is current price. Will it increase? Is this move an attempt to secure more FSD users? Current up front purchase price $8k.

I would guess their one time purchase take rate dropped to near zero once they introduced the subscription option anyways.

Oh fun! $99 a month for the opportunity to be driven through a wall, Wyle-E-Coyote style,
and then get cooked, well done, when you can’t find the emergency door release. All while the CEO lies and makes an ass out of himself.

hmm funny thing about software... it generally gets improved over time. My other car is a Model Y... Last month it drove me end to end including parking a little over 500 miles. I didn't have to catch it once. The version 6 months ago of FSD couldn't do that. Now, in my estimation it drives better than the vast majority of humans.

It’s a revenue stream issue. They want more revenue streams so they made it subscription only. There is no other reason.
+1 it's recurring revenue

I read someplace yesterday the take rate prior to the monthly option was 12%. I was surprised it was that high.

The nice thing is you can pause and resume your subscription, IE only activate it when you need it. Lane centering/enhanced cruise is always there.

My desire would be FSD when traveling, or on vacation, eg.

It would take 10 years to pay the same amount monthly, as opposed to buying it outright one time. I have never kept a vehicle 10 years, so the subscription is cheaper.

Given Ford's capabilities with Bluecruise, I'd consider $20/month reasonable. Tesla FSD is remarkable, as demonstrated in the test drive I took (2026 Y).

It's called "take". At the 1 payment price, few took it. So, they move to a subscription option, hoping they get a big uptick in take, and little cancels. They likely are booking the future stream of revenue also.

We were able to experience FSD on our 2026 Teslas for 40 days for free recently. Prior to that we had 30 days of free trial when we purchased the cars in September. The recent version functions extremely well, much better than the September version. We also have ussd Blue Cruise on our Lightnings for over 2 years.

I drove with FSD 97% of the time in the last 2,000 miles with the new version 14.xx. Now that the trial is over I really miss it. We have 2 Model Y's and I just can't justify $198 a month. If I only had the one Tesla I would absolutely subscribe to FSD.

I ask Grok AI in the car to input a trip into the Tesla nav then just tap the FSD icon. It backs out of my garage, down the driveway, signals and turns onto the street. Then it takes us around several roundabouts and finally to the local supermarket and parks itself. When leaving the supermarket I tell Grok to take me home, ouch et FSD icon and the next thing I know I'm parked in my garage without touching controls.

I did the same with the 125 mille trip to our cabin. Never touched the controls once. It is AMAZING! Our Blue cruise by comparison is very primitive. Plus it doesn't work on 99% of the roads we use so it's useless.

Oh good, can't wait for more non-Tesla drivers on the road to be unwittingly part of a beta test.

If people hate driving this much and would like to be driven around poorly, then please just take an Uber.
