If you're really that paranoid get an EcoFlow Delta Pro, or 2, and you get 3.6/7.2 kw of juice. They have a 30amp outlet so you could L2 and they can be recharged at a L2 public charge station.

Downside - Each one is 100lbs and $3.7k, but you should be be able to get a 35% tax credit as a "home solar" purchase.

If we did that here.....then it would become steamed shrimp after short drive. :)

The correct way to do what your friend is doing is to purchase a PHEV, or what BMW calls an electric car with a "Range Extender".

If you absolutely want a backup power source then consider one of those ZipCharge chargers when they become available.

What’s up with ridiculous posts today. First someone wants to install a DC fast charger at their home and now someone wants to carry a generator with gas in the car what is wrong with people??‍♂

Holy crap. I tried to talk to that guy who wanted to install basically an illegal device in his gated neighborhood of mansions. He was a gamey piece of roadkill fast. Deleted due to lack of parenting..

If you get an EV truck, maybe you can pull one of these hydrogen full cells with a DCFC attached. GM used this trailer to charge their 17 Hummer EVs that were in Phoenix for a media event. They had a CCS charger on the back of the trailer.

Probably more price and weight per energy than a generator, but if I was to do something, I would go with something like

Less maintenance for something that sits idle 99.99% of the time, having gas go stale, etc...
That said, it's designed for commercial companies like a road side service so probably not really cost effective for that rare case you can't get electricity elsewhere... but if I had more disposable money than I knew what to do with and wanted some expensive toys...

There is almost no point in carrying a portable generator when you can just proceed to the nearest L2 station or 14-50 outlet. You’d need a pretty big/heavy generator to beat a typical 6.6 kW L2 station. If you are in a really remote area, there are still lots of 120V outlets around as backup which would be the equivalent of carrying a small 120V portable generator around. Supervising the generator and keeping the gas tank filled for many hours at a time would also get extremely annoying, you’d be tethered to the drone for hours.

Route and charge planning skills are the key to success with a BEV, not having to rely on a backup generator. Someone who thinks they should carry a generator is not ready for a BEV. I would just drive my gas car if the charging situation was that bad where I’m going.

He’s not ready for BEV ownership. Should have simply went with PHEV.
Exactly. They're designed for just that capability. And are significantly cheaper.

One of my friends told me that he keeps a small/portable Honda generator (with tank of gas) in the car, in case the car runs out of juice completely. That maybe his paranoia, not lack of planning. I found the idea interesting as this gives an option to charge the car in such cases, just to get to the nearest charging station as needed.. your thoughts?
whats the downside in this?
No. Just no

LMAO. He's either pulling your leg, or he needs professional help. Michigan resident here.
WI resident here. I have actually seen this tried and it generated 2 miles in one hour, as RickMache suggested.
