Help me decide: Mach-E or Model Y

I'm also on the fence on the MME and Model Y. I'm not a big fan of Tesla but am impressed by their technology and lack of nagging problems that plague the MME. I love the how the MME looks and handles but am concerned about the horror stories posted on this forum. I want a car that is pretty much flawless and will not cause much drama or anguish. I think the MME a probably a solid five years away from working out the software bugs based on what is posted on the forum. Either car we get is likely going to be a commuter anyway, so the fact it may brick every other day will only be a minor inconvenience and not strand us in the middle of nowhere with a towing headache.

You don't hear from the owners bragging constantly about how trouble free their MMEs are. Maybe I could tell you in my three weeks of ownership that my GT brings me joy every time I sit in it and that I probably ruined my neighbors life by letting him test drive it last weekend, but that wouldn't be very interesting on this forum.

A normal day doesn’t make the news headlines.

There are a few threads about people posting who have had zero issues.

Seems 99% of what you see anyways are just software bugs that are temporary.

The people who have had an actual thing break that required a tow or trip to the dealer are pretty rare.

I think I will get a CarMax estimate for our MYLR. With the seat being a problem, I don't know how long I will keep it if I can't fix it. I ordered it in late July when it was $54k and it's gone up a fair amount since then. Good question on the tax I paid, I should look it up.

My MME is scheduled for production on 1/12/22, but it might be better to sell the MYLR before the tax credit situation is decided. Then there's my Q4 order. I don't know. The MY won in my case as it came first, but I've already spent a lot trying to get it up to speed between shades, screens and coatings.

I have only about 600 miles on it as well, since taking delivery on 11/5.

I have had a few issues with my MME but overall I am very satisfied. I too considered a Model Y; here are a few thing to consider - when Tesla ramped up production of the Model Y there were a lot of quality issue, especially with fit & finish. I not sure if they have overcome those issues. The wait time for a Model Y last spring was essentially the same as an MME (I actually got my MME before I could have gotten a Y since I called around and found a program car). And last, but not least, Model Ys look like turtles - the MME styling blows Tesla away.

I have a GT... It's awesome with no issues at all.
My friends and family love it.
Everyone giggles like school children when they first feel the acceleration. My 6'4 ex O lineman buddy giggling like that was hilarious!
I'm learning to really push it, and you can get the tail to be a little playful, which a Tesla will not. But, it's still very planted and firm, and surprisingly easy to control. I've been able to take it through some decent curves at 60 mph, which my previous sport sedan would never had done.

They’re both great cars. I hope since you’ve posted, which is now a few months back, you’ve had a chance to test drive both. Based on the pros of each that you laid out, it’s a pretty clear choice of MME over Model Y to me due to build quality, fit and finish, ride comfort and quietness. If I’m paying > 55K for a car I want it to feel worthy of that price. As the tax incentives sit currently, MME is also the winner, but of course that may change in a few months - potentially in Tesla’s favor if the MME remains categorized as a wagon (many higher end MMEs will no longer qualify for tax incentives if that happens). With that said, if I were buying tomorrow, it’d definitely be MME for me. The supercharger network argument also doesn’t hold water at this point; Elon is already prototyping opening it up to other EVs in the Netherlands; it’s only a matter of time until that’s the case everywhere.

A very small percentage of Mach-E owners are having anything more than minor inconveniences. The MME is the only EV SUV that Consumer Report recommends for reliability. After almost four months of ownership my only complaint is that my radio favorites keeps reverting back to showing 5 stations when I have it set to show 15. I am beginning to think that some people in this day and age consider something like this to be a deal breaker.

No major issues after 5 and 1/2 months and 4600 miles. Still debating whether or not to do the Windshield/Pano Roof recall. I expected better build quality coming from Ford!!

I have had my Mach-E Premium AWD ER for 8 months now. I have about 8,700 miles on it. I had one issue that required a dealer visit - my audio system stopped working. They did a software update and fixed the problem (and gave me a free loaner to use while they did this). Nothing else I would consider major. I have occasionally encountered what appeared to be software glitches but they never reoccurred the next time I drove the car and never affected core functions.

Advantage Tesla Model Y

• Known reliability. Tesla has been making EVs for a while now, and has straightened out a lot of early production issues. Ford is just getting started, so there are likely to be a lot more issues for the first few years. Will a 2022 Mach-E be as reliable as a 2022 Model Y? What will the difference in cost of ownership be in 10 years?
• Polished UI. The touchscreen is really snappy, whereas the Mach-E touchscreen is sluggish. The Tesla software seems a little more refined too.
• Supercharger network. I have a lot more confidence that I won’t get stranded on long trips.
• Joy of driving. I’ve seen plenty of YouTube videos of people testing these two cars side by side and stating they enjoy driving the Tesla more, especially comparing the one pedal driving. Granted most of these people are Tesla owners, but not all. I have taken a test drive in both, and Tesla even gave me an overnight test drive. I will admit, the Tesla did feel a bit more responsive on the pedal, though it wasn't a huge difference.
• Performance. The Model Y base model does 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds, and comes with AWD standard. The Mach-E RWD model I ordered does it in 6.1. Yes, I could upgrade to the AWD model and achieve 4.8, but this is an extra $2.7K. (Aside, I actually prefer the longer range and cheaper price which is why I’m not upgrading the Mach-E.)
• Cargo capacity. 68 cu ft vs 60 doesn’t seem like much, but it could make the difference. I am choosing a hatchback for a reason: I want to carry things.
• Autopilot. As of today, Tesla’s autopilot is more capable than Ford’s version. Ford is still developing theirs, so this could change. I have no interest in FSD.

A few things that are advantages that you did not list.

Tesla actually does frequent OTA updates. Ford says they will do this but may not actually follow through on it.

Heat pump, this is an advantage in locations where winter is mild such as California. It will provide a lower reduction in range due to cabin heat in the cold months. It may not be a big advantage in Michigan, but that's not where I live.

Charge time on level 3. Charge time is lower because the batteries have better thermal management. They can keep the charge wattage higher for longer periods of time. The Mache drives high wattage but not for very long.

I know you mentioned performance but it is actually more profound than that. Performance is considerably better on the Y performance version. This is because the Tesla has better thermal management of the battery.

The batteries have better thermal management. This may lead to better longevity; this is not known at this time, but it is a logical conclusion.

A pro for the Mach-e is Magneride suspension, but it's only available on the highest trim making it unreachable for many.

i have no major issues with the car just software issues that keep improving with every update to the car and Fordpass app it's got quirks but I had a Volvo and that had software quirks too.
