Same reasons, but not the same effects. Items such as heat pump can impact the effects, and so model Y is expected to do better than the model 3 in cold weather. Other items can be done to make the effects different per vehicle which is why you need a real world independent tests and not make assumptions that every vehicle takes an identical effect from their published numbers.

2nd to last and roughly double the loss of 40% of the cars is an odd way of saying middle of the pack.

Out of Spec Motoring did a range test on the Tesla Model Y Performance. Driving 70mph with little wind and in 84F temps, they got 270wh/mi (3.7mi/kWh) efficiency and determined the battery pack to have a usable capacity of 74kWh.

10:07 timestamp if you want to hear the breakdown.

I think it's surprisingly good because the estimated range on Tesla's site is 280mi on the Ăśberturbines which means their test was practically spot-on.

If you concede the Model Y Performance is 15% more efficient at the same speed than the Premium AWD ER, then we're looking at 3.15mi/kWh. So to just guesstimate numbers here:

90kWh usable x 3.15mi/kWh = 283mi @ 70mph

Road trip that out to arrive at 10% remaining charge with subsequent charges to 80% and you get...

Garage to stop 1 = 254 miles
Stop 1 to subsequent stops = 198 miles

That's 452 miles of freeway range with one 40-45min charging stop.

It surprised me too. 70 mph with the AC on I would have expected significantly less.

No, it's really not surprising that they achieved 270 miles. The EPA test is done at 65MPH, and the test here they did was going from high elevation to low with a tailwind on the way as well. This was literally best case scenario for that test. Charlotte is 800 feet above sea level. Rocky Mount is 100 feet above sea level. That is 700 ft decrease in elevation plus winds are always west to east. They were more than likely averaging less than 65 MPH when you factor in tailwinds.

I live on the East coast of NC, and I regularly see 230WH/MI on that same drive coming from charlotte to rocky mount area. On the way out west to charlotte, I see 270WH/Mi on my model 3 because you have headwinds and increasing elevation. Makes a HUGE difference. Why do you think they didn't film the trip back with their efficiency?

I've gone from east coast to Raleigh and averaged 380 WH/Mi in the winter, with bad headwinds, and rain. That is probably worst case. In a Model 3 AWD with Aeros.
