I have the level 2 ford charger and I was wondering if it makes any difference getting a different level 2 charger or should I just stick with the ford one?

Depends a little on your own needs. I have the Ford charger packed up in the trunk because I like having a charger with me in the car if I end up needing one somewhere (rare but possible). And I have a ChargePoint charger installed in my garage, where I do most of my charging.

I just didn't want to have to wind up and pack the mobile charger every day just to keep a charger in the car with me. This way I charge at home and just hang it up in the morning and still have the mobile charger in the trunk if I need it.

I bought my first EV 8 years ago, got a quality L2 with a 25ft cable, its been used for 95% of all my charging across 3 EVs and 8 years. I keep the ford one in my trunk for road trips. From what I have read the Ford would not have held up for 8 years of continual use so well worth it.

Another factor is if you Ford ones dies on you where do you charge? Can you last a week while you wait for an online order to deliver? If that is easy, no big deal, if you live somewhere remote I would want a backup.

Ford makes THREE level 2 chargers.

The Ford Mobile Charger came with 2021 - 2022s, then was optional in 2023. It charges at 32amps.

Assuming that's what you have, you could buy a level 2 charger to charge as fast as 48amps, i.e. 50% faster. And much more reliable. Many threads on this.

Highly recommended is the ChargePoint HomeFlex.

The mobile charger was included (not optional) for the job 1 2023’s. At mid-year, they started charging an extra $500 for it.

For 48a EVSE’s, they need to be hard-wired. 40 amps (and lower) can use a plug. (Just something to consider when making choices.)

If you read through the threads you will find that many users of the Ford mobile units have had failures. Of course many have not. However, the failure rate is high enough that I would suggest one of the many other wall mount brands available. Keep the mobile unit in the trunk for travel or emergencies.

I would recommend going with a different one because it will be more reliable. The Ford Mobile Charger is notorious for having overheating failures (amber light) that slow down charging speeds.

If you want to know how much electricity your ev is using, get a smart charger. I use an Autel that charges at 48 amps and the Autel app shows a running total of the cost to fuel my ev.

What is the best plug-in Level 2 charger? I have a 14-50 outlet. I currently use the Ford mobile charger successfully but I can see the value of keeping it in reserve.
