if it happens again Im gonna start investigating, ive got a couple of wireless unifi cameras I could stick one on the floor of the garage to see if something runs under it. Ide be more inclined if there were some evidence of critters, to think that, but so weird.
I've got about 20 WiFi enabled rat traps throughout my house/garage since I live on acres of property - it's just rural life. So I would think that they would prefer the peanut butter over playing with the lift gate.

That being said, I've had it happen 1 minute after I walked inside the house in the middle of the day, so I'm sure it's not a critter. I've also setup a camera and nothing was there.

we get more snakes than mice, dad gets more mice than anything, but he lives on lots of acres, we border a cattle farm though.

Well, save me the trouble of setting up a camera I guess.

Give some of your snakes to your Dad... sounds like he could use them!

Who knew that sending rats money via Zelle would yield such good results... ?

We have 10 mobile rat traps. They also dispose of the body parts (usually). Barn cats. No rat or mice issues here. 10 acres.

Seriously. Rodents are an issue mist everywhere. Traps and peanut butter are cheaper than wiring repairs or body work from damaged Lift gates opening in the garage.

I don’t know much about PIR and exactly what it is that the sensors respond to but would they respond to a difference in lighting? For example, if the garage door has windows and the area under the trunk changes from light to dark (maybe from sun setting or something else), could that trigger it, or does it have to be motion? And when the sensor is triggered what is the mode of communication within the car to have it open the trunk? Trying to understand what sort of interference could do this.

Yeah, at my old house I built a redneck trap and put it in the crawlspace, bucket with a soda can coated in peanutbutter suspended in the middle, anti-freeze in the bucket, empty it every 3-6 months full of mice.

Warning: this is probably a dumb idea but thought I would mention it. I have a camera in my garage that occasionally senses motion with the movement of sun/clouds through the garage window. Any chance the sensors for the hatch work the same way?

Its definitely not light sensitive, that would be a nightmare, and PIR and PhotoElectric sensors are roughly the same cost anyway.

PIR just sits there using very low power and detects a thermal mass crossing the sensor, usually adjustable sensitivity, a hot leaf can set off a PIR sensor, which is something I had to explain to a Ring engineer....

Active infrared sends out actual infrared light and has a sensor that measures the change. Its usually a sender and receiver. You can see AIR with many phone cameras, but night vision cameras are a common use, the use IR to illuminate the area. an Iphone uses AIR to illuminate your face for face unlock. The sensors on the steering column have 2 IR lights that flash at about 5hz and 2 sensors that see this light. I can actually see this happening on my garage camera when the car is charging.

It could, but most cameras that sense motion only sense the motion as a change to the picture, a PIR sensor would be unaffected.

Also in my case it was 2 hours after dark in the back of my garage.

Not a dumb idea at all, but I don't have any windows towards the back of my garage. The door itself does, but it wouldn't cast a shadow that far. Additionally, I've had this happen at night when it's completely dark.

This is what I was thinking of as well, that sunlight (or lack) could cause a temp change under the car that is picked up by the sensor. But from some responses above it wouldn’t seem to explain it.

Breaking it down into the two steps (though there are probably more) either the sensor is actually picking up something, or there is some other interference downstream from the sensor that is making the car think the sensor has triggered. So how does the information flow from sensor to the car’s “brain” that sends the command to the trunk to open? And would that be susceptible to electrical interference?
