Two reasons off the top of my head:
1. To avoid breaking every car out there in the case something goes wrong. (Which just happened to some of us.)
2. Server capacity limits.

These are two reasons computer OS updates are sent out in waves.
@Johnny B also local laws and regulations that differ between countries.

1. This could be avoided if they had a beta program. Oh wait, they do, they just don’t use it enough.

2. Most major companies make their updates available to anyone who wants them on a particular day, then push them to everyone else in waves. Ford is missing that first part.

Is not EA Ford's version of beta opt in?

It’s opt in, and they have to select you, and they have to then push the betas to you. Just because you’re in EA doesn’t mean you get early access to every new version.

Not getting excited. Spare a thought for the UK (at least for me), nothing since 2.7.1
Thought no new releases until the year of mourning is complete

I don’t think EA is a “beta program” per se (I’m in it). It’s more of an opportunity for Ford to send production software to you earlier than to some other users. It also means that you may be asked to complete some surveys for Ford. Couple of other minor things. Buy not access to what people would consider “beta” software.

I will be curious to see if there will be a PowerUp 4.2.1 and, if so, what it will contain. Note: I have absolutely NO information or knowledge about any powerups or numbering schemes. This is just idle curiosity on my part.

RE:
1) that is why every SW company on the planet does testing.
2) phone, TV, computer system patches etc... are all much bigger than the updates pushed to our cars. Surge server capacity is solved with a phone call to their cloud provider.

I think you're testing the final release candidates in the EA program. They have spotted issues with the updates on occasion after they're pushed to the first round of EA cars.

So my 2022 Mach E will also get the new 4A Sync?
I expect we all will get it, at least those of us receiving PowerUps. A Lightning owner reported receiving 4.1.1.
