Oh yea of little faith!
Hi Mustang Mach-E Owners,

Ford Motor Company has issued a recall for Certain 2021-2022 model year Mustang Mach-E extended range and GTs built between May 27, 2020 to May 24, 2022 related to failures of the High Voltage Battery Junction Box (HVBJB).

If your vehicle is included in this recall, you will receive a message from Ford soon with next steps.

In the meantime, you can also verify if your vehicle is included by entering your VIN at www.ford.com/support/recalls/

What is the issue tied to this recall?
Direct Current (“DC”) fast charging and repeated wide open pedal events can cause the high voltage battery main contactors to overheat on certain Mustang Mach-E extended range and GT models. Overheating may lead to deformation of the electrical contact surfaces, which can result in a contactor that is prevented from properly closing or a contactor that welds closed. An overheated contactor that is prevented from properly closing while driving can result in a loss of motive power.

What is the cause of the issue?
The high voltage battery main contactor is not robust to heat generated from multiple DC fast-charge and wide-open pedal events. A prior software update improved monitoring and management of the main contactor. Damage to the extended range and GT contactors caused by wear prior to the software update may reduce the effectiveness of the software.

What is the expected repair?
Once parts are available, owners will be asked to take their vehicle to a Ford dealer to replace the High Voltage Battery Junction Box.

Do I still need the software update related to this recall if I haven’t yet received it?
Yes.

Which vehicles are affected?
Certain 2021-2022 model year Mustang Mach-E extended range and GTs built between May 27, 2020 to May 24, 2022.

Why are Standard Range vehicles not affected?
Standard range contactors are not included because of the difference in heat generated in the contactors. The extended range and GT vehicles will see more current flow through the contactors than the standard range due, in part, to larger battery capacity and higher output electric drive motors.

What are you doing to take care of customers?
We are working through how we will support affected owners, including providing rentals and pick-up and delivery services.

Is there anything a customer can do to reduce the chance of the contactor overheating until their vehicle is repaired?
Until parts are ready, we ask that affected customers limit repeated back-to-back wide open pedal accelerations and use DC Fast Charging only when necessary.

Is there a warning sign that customers should be aware of?
For vehicles that previously received the software update in most cases, the software will proactively detect damage to the contactors and display a warning wrench light. If the contactors weld closed while driving, there will be no immediate effect on vehicle operation. Upon the next key cycle, a wrench light will be illuminated, and vehicle will not start. If the contactors are prevented from properly closing while driving, a wrench light will be illuminated, the vehicle will display “Stop Safely Now” and the vehicle will immediately lose motive power. The vehicle will coast to a stop, and all low voltage systems including power brakes, steering and lights will remain functional.

When will you notify customers of the recall?
We began sending letters to customers on November 3rd. Customers can also verify if their vehicle is included by entering their VIN at www.ford.com/support/recalls/

Will there be a charge to customers?
Customers will not be charged for service.

What is Ford’s reference number for this recall?
The reference number is 23S56.
My sticker indicates my MachE GT was manufactured
Did you purchase yours new or used? Real question is has the HVBJB already been replaced? My understanding is cars that have had their original HVBJB’s replaced were pulled from the recall list.
Purchased it new, I’m the only owner, never taken the car in for service

So I would be patient. Either a mistake on Ford’s part and more information will come out as the part becomes available or maybe you were lucky and your car was built with the new HVBJB. It was manufactured within one week of the official changeover to the new part date. You may be able to call into the BEV team at some point and check on your VIN but I would wait until the recall work starts and then recheck the list of affected vehicles.

I have a 2023 dual motor extended range. I have a lead foot so I guess I put the HVJB in the wide open state often. From everything I've read here about newer HVJBs not really having a clear fix for this I don't have a fuzzy feeling that one day I won't be hit by this. :/.

I just got the mailed recall notice form Ford today. Now I have to wait until the dealer can get parts and has the resources to do the work. Not sure when that will happen. Considering the fact the supply chain issues have cleared up and new sales of the Mach e have declined, perhaps the parts will show up soon without long delays.

We shall see. ?

Got a letter yesterday, but it was only about the charge port CSB. And when I check the Ford recall website, that's the only thing listed as well. (When the recall notice first went out my VIN showed both the CSB ad the recall. So my VIN was part of the culling of the list, presumably due to the HVBJB having been replaced in August.

@Ford Motor Company

I have a curious question, why was it when this recall was issued the HVJB recall was in PTS but now it does not show?

Is it because we have already had 2 HVJB replaced? Is it because we are at almost 100k???

Our first failure was Christmas eve 2021 6 hours into an 8 hour trip. Stranded without rental or transportation for 4 days..... We are planning to do the same trip in 3 weeks for Thanksgiving. Should we not take this trip now??

Second failure was 6 months AFTER we got the vehicle back end of January 2022.

What should we do? Ours most certainly is among the group covered under the recall as we have a 2021 XAWD with build date of 10-December-2020

I received my recall letter for this recall (23S56) and the BCCM recall (23B50) yesterday as well.

I had my HVBJB failure repaired 2 weeks ago. My VIN still reports as valid for this recall. We'll see if it stays that way.

It's odd that if the parts are not different that Ford implies that once the recall is completed that you can resume back to back WOT events and DC fast charging even though we all know the current replacement parts will continue to fail under these same conditions. Is it really only about the _failure rate_?

So, for people who have expiring Blue Oval Network credits, is Ford going to extend the date on these since their failure is leading them to tell us not to use them?
