I apologize for bringing this old one back up, but now after "extensive testing" I was able to recreate the bug of random flashes. In my case it seems to be a bug that occurs when using sync nav but Android Auto is also running. The best I can tell is that although I'm using sync for nav, Android Auto still has the map open and for some reason it periodically updates the Android map in the background causing the bar to flash.

If I disconnect from Android Auto I cannot recreate the bug. I haven't tested to see if that's can occur using AA via USB versus wireless.
This actually makes sense. I was having some issues with android auto for a few days and disabled wireless AA. In that time, I remember using the built in nav again, and remember noticing the blue bar actually was working as intended. I never put the two together, just thought it was a fix in one of the OTAs. But since I've went back to using AA I haven't tried the built-in nav, especially since it still won't show the actual roads for me.

For clarification, when you say you see the blue bar, are you referring to the blue bar that appears about 1/2 mile from scheduled turns (working as intended) or the intermittent flashing blue bar that seems to occur randomly.

And by giving up on car play do you mean you no longer run it, or just do not use it but it is setup.
I’ve never understood the purpose of the vertical blue bar. It appears to come and go at random. Navigating, not navigating, coming up to a turn, in the middle of going straight with no upcoming directions, daytime, nighttime, clear skies, cloudy skies, listening to Joy Division, listening to Lady Gaga, you name it. The blue bar is a free spirit ?

I no longer use CarPlay. I’m not sure if it connects or not. Sometimes, it appears my phone is connected via Bluetooth, and sometimes, it appears my phone is connected via WiFi to the ProjXxxx WiFi network. Again, seems pretty random.

Thanks, yes that would be the random intermittent blue bar.

What you describe about the Proj.... Wifi appears to be the wireless connection for AA or CP.

This is helpful info. If you are interested you may consider going to the phone list and disabling Apple CP, see if the behavior persists.

Just as a point of clarification, I think this issue may not apply to car play at the moment. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but when you navigate via Google maps or apple maps in car play I think there are no directions on the instrument cluster. Only on the center screen.

I think you can only get directions on the instrument cluster screen with AA or Ford Nav.

As for my experience, I get random flashes when using Ford Nav (AA in the background. Both wired and wireless). But when I use nav via Google maps in AA, I get directions on the Instrument cluster and no blue bars ever

Thanks. this is consistent with what I am able to reproduce (except I have not tested the wired AA). I also do not have the patience to setup an iPhone to test, but there is at least one report of someone who appears to have CP setup with this issue.

Yeah, this is the same for me. It's only while using the built in nav.

So cool, after 5 months and nearly 100 posts, we've confirmed how to repro it, but no one has gotten to the bottom of what it is?

Same for me, AA is no blue bar. Ford nav built in provides meaningless blue bar.

Since I didn't see anyone else test/confirm this I disconnected wireless AA and ran nav with AA in the background via USB. The random blue bar did flash a few times but not as often as when the phone connected wirelessly via AA. Then disconnected again and no random blue bar flashing.

I also had the phone connected Bluetooth for media and had no issues.

So if you get this bug and it bugs you, it seems going to phone list and disconnecting the phone from AA or CP will likely fix your issue (unless you want AA or CP for other functions).

For me if I use the built-in nav I don't need AA, and if I want music from my phone I can connect via Bluetooth.

(Note, blue bar will still appear when it should, when there are instructions about upcoming turns on the main screen).

I still get the vertical blue bar appearing at random intervals, uncorrelated to imminent maneuvers and I don’t use Apple CarPlay. I have no idea what’s going on with it. I wish Ford would either document its function, change it to a clearer, more self-explanatory icon, or do away with it.

You mentioned your phone connects to ProjXxxx WiFi network which I believe is for Car Play. Go under phone list and see if you have the option under that phone to disconnect car play.

I saw this appear yesterday as I was approaching a toll booth. It seemed to pop up while I was getting instructions from the Nav system.

I had to turn of project apps because it seemed to disable the car’s ability to connect to my home WiFi and my phone would connect to that instead of remaining connected to my house WiFi when I was in the garage meaning I lost internet connectivity whenever I was in the garage. That app projection thing really needs to be rethought.

That might not be enough to address the flashing blue bar. I'm not as familiar with Apple, but I know Android Auto uses both Bluetooth and wireless to connect. In fact it uses Bluetooth even if you don't use Android wireless.

So, even if you turn off wireless projection, the Bluetooth connect may still connect your phone via car play if it was ever setup before. Once the phone detects the Bluetooth network it tries to start Car play.

I'd recommend going into the settings -> phone list -> drop down menu for the phone -> click disable car play (if it is an option).
