Tesla Slashes Prices

I currently own a 22 Mache Premium AWD ER.

After Tesla reduced the price on MY, I was trying to see if MY would be a better fit and value for us, for a possible trade-in or as a 2nd vehicle.

I had previously test driven MY 21, so was somewhat familiar with the ride quality and features, but had heard that MY 23 may have improved.

So, I did a back to back test drive today of MME and MY on the same route.

Some of my observations:
1. The ride in MY is rough and bouncy with quite a bit of cabin noise. MME ride was smoother, quieter and refined.
2. Driver seat in MY was not as comfortable as MME.
3. My teenage son was in the backseat and he said MY seats were not comfortable either compared to MME.
4. The rear window on MY is small and makes rear visibility sub-par
5. Small font of the display screen in MY made it difficult to change settings during driving.


With the above, and lack of features such as 360 degree view, rear traffic alerts, blind spot monitoring and Apple Car Play, I realized that I would not be happy with MY.

My wife who was also with me during the test ride, had the same impressions. Both of us also felt MME was a much better looking car.

So, I decided not to pursue MY.

And yet the majority of professional comparisons either favor the MY or call it a tie. Funny how people that have already purchased MMEs try and convince the world its a better car on a MME message board. ?

They are both good EVs. The model Y has its own set on plus points like superior software and support, solid charger network, brand loyalty and its perceived as a luxury brand by many, not to mention its not a Ford which in itself is a huge plus for many.

If you drive a MME great but at the current pricing the MY is a steal. Ask yourself this if you were buying a MME Premium with extended range would you not be tempted by the MY long range for $20k less.

I was noticing the exact same thing. Most of the hate and fud on the Model Y on this forum are from existing MME owners. We get it, you don't like Elon, the car is ugly, etc.

For any rational person that has not taken delivery of a MME, the Model Y is worth a look at this crazy price.

The MME has some pluses, but software, super charging, proven battery and powertrain, built in dashcam and sentry mode, dog mode, camp mode, car wash mode, real OTA's, PaaK that is bulletproof, an app that is fully featured, more than 1 ev service tech per dealer, etc are NOT where the MME shines.

And the numbers show that. Last year Tesla delivered over 1.3 Million EVs world wide with over 500,000 of those being sold in the USA. And that was before the massive price drop announced last week. Ford (and every other brand for that matter) is nowhere even remotely close to those kind of numbers. With the new pricing structure I am sure that volume will only increase, and might even decrease numbers from competing brands if the pricing structure holds with little response from the other manufactures.

Most of my driving is within the city, with 1-2 road trips a year. With more DC charging stations being opened, I felt the charging network for non-Tesla’s would be much better in a few years.

My experience with Mache software has been good. I continue to get updates, and I like Apple Car Play better.
In my case, I would continue to look at other vehicles, such as an ID4 or EV6, if I would like them.

But if the final 2 choices are only MY and MME, I agree $20k difference is a compelling factor. If Ford does not reduce the price gap significantly, it will lose some customers to MY.

Obviously Ford will lose some potential price sensitive customers due to price drop. Just like Tesla still loses customers to even cheaper ICE vehicles.

That doesn't mean it's a problem. I don't know that Ford has gone to the mainstream buyers yet with the MME. I don't think I've met a single person who even realized that this particular model existed prior to seeing my car.

I think it's more of a sign that Tesla was having problems moving cars and Ford wasn't. Of course it becomes more of an issue the longer the discrepancy exists and if Ford isn't able to enter the market with a lower price vehicle, they're going to miss out on a large segment of customers.

If I were Ford, I would only be concerned if Tesla somehow was able to make good money at these margins now and is able to keep the prices significantly lower than the competition. If this is a move designed to dump unwanted inventory and a way to kickstart interest that may have waned due to a certain person's Twitter habits, then I'd have less of a concern.

In any case, it's a welcome shake up of a market that was trending quickly in the wrong price direction....

Tesla have been working towards this for several years. The super facilities and controlling there own battery development gives them a massive market advantage. Musk started buy lithium and other mineral resources years ago. Tesla can undercut the market and still maintain a decent margin.

That's exactly what they SHOULD do. However, Tesla stock is a giant house of cards, built on a story of hypergrowth forever. If they decrease production and acknowledge that Tesla is on the road to becoming just another low-margin automaker, the stock will crash hard. Even harder than it already has.

Mr. Musk prefers to maintain sales and cut margins, so stockholders can continue to dream of unlimited forever growth.

You haven't been following the Tesla plan very closely. Scaling to "extreme size" doesn't include cutting production. And with the profit margins they have they could very well be the only EV manufacturer that could do that now as others have pointed out.

It could be you have a better grasp of the EV business than Elon though, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Anyone who says $20k price difference wouldn’t make a huge impact on the market likely slept through the price elasticity class.

We can appreciate and love the Mach-E, but don’t need to twist ourselves into a pretzel to defy economics…and logic. As one of my former bosses used to say: only the paranoid survive. I hope Farley and Co have already convened an emergency meeting in Dearborn and are preparing a response.

Mark I think it is normal on just about any automotive forum to have a lot of negativity written by its' members in regards to other manufacturers vehicles. The amount of Tesla hate on this forum though is downright hilarious with some posters showing their disdain even several times in the same thread. I have honestly been very surprised about the hatred for Elon Musk when he has done so much to make EV's mainstream. ?

This. Plus soon they'll have tesla and non-teslas paying into their superchargers. Tesla positioned themselves to be profitable on the backend of EVs too. Without maintenance and servicing, legacies are losing out on a lot of money that they're used to.

It is obviously weird to talk about a different brand being better (value at least) on a specific car's forum. A lot of us (old timers) also got our MME at cheaper prices than the current MY prices. So at similar prices I'd buy the MME again. But with a $20k difference, there's just no way. Those arguing otherwise are kidding themselves, don't care about $20k missing from their accounts, or unfortunately need to just justify their recent purchase.

I think you are spot on, anyone who says that a $20,000 price difference between two comparable competing autos doesn't matter is kidding themselves. Maybe they are that loyal but the majority of people will take notice.

Sounds like a lot of speculation. Have profit margins been published? Why did they raise prices only to later slash them? That makes previous buyers upset and isn't very smart...
