As others have said, providing 2-3 trims with options for RWD/AWD, and battery capacity is reasonable for most. In my case I didn't "need" AWD since I live in Cali, but I would have liked the extra power. The EX range battery would have been nice to have too, again it wasn't needed. Ultimately it came down to cost, I didn't want to spend an extra $8k (to add both options) on an already expensive purchase. Having options to reduce the barrier to entry made all the difference for me.

Wow, don't even think about looking at the F-150 ordering options available LOL!

Actually the Mach-E is considered to have few options compared to most vehicles (and thus easier to assemble).
Heck I will do some better. Do not look at the Ranger page or Maverick lol. HEck don't even look at the Mustang Page itself. Let me see Mustang their are the following and this is all done by memory so I could be off some.

Mustang
Mustang Premium
Mustang GT
Mustang Rousse
Mustang GT 350 (Shelby I think are only variants)
Mustang GT 500 (Shelby I think are only variants)

So Do i need to list the different ranger and maverick options or even just list the F150 that would take an entire page.

Back to the original comment Mustang is about power but rather it is AWD or RWD doesn't matter. As for electric cars (BEV) it is all about efficiency as well. So for example I live in Southern California why would I spend another 6k on a motor that I will never need. It has just enough power for me and that is enough. Now for all yall power hungry track mongrils then obviously you will go with the AWD variant for the extra power and torque. But everybody's needs are different and for Me if I were to get the MAch-E I would be ok with just the DPremium package.

I would like there to be more options. Specifically paint colors/interior colors, a panoramic roof that actually opened, and a larger battery option wouldn't hurt. Speaking of the Tesla configurator, it could not be more boring. I could play on a Porsche configurator all day.
Tesla keeps it simple because it makes their manufacturing throughput more streamlined since they struggled for years to keep up with the demand when there was only 1 factory. Things are better now with the Shanghai facility building the Asia and Euro-spec vehicles. Once Berlin & Austin are functional, throughput shouldn't be as bad but they may keep the existing model.

Why is there always an immediate visceral response about Tesla? Tesla is doing something right, whether you like the cars or not or Elon being eccentric. They sell a ton of cars, stock price is crazy high.
Huh??? If Tesla is selling "a ton of cars", what would you call the amount of cars that Ford, etc. sold in 2020?

Well, Tesla did beat the pants off of BMW, at least, LOL, LOL.

Put me down as another vote for more configurations. I would have loved to have Magnaride as an option on my AWD EXT. Would have paid mucho dollar for it as well, no interest in the GT. I like that Blue Cruise is an option with a renewal option. I would have loved about 6 more wheel options and an option for a good heat pump. Also would pay mucho dollar.

I don't know anyone who thinks more options is confusing or not good. Where does this type of thinking come from?

You know what I mean, They still a relatively new company and have sold a ton of EV when everyone else was dumping money into lobby and not R+D for an alternative fuel future. Everyone is copying them.

I don't care what your chart says.

In other words, you don’t care about facts. Ok.

BTW, Tesla is now more than 18 years old and it’s first production car was delivered more than 13 years ago. It’s hardly a new company.

Okay facts daddy, I'll rephrase...I don't care about the charts as you have presented them. I was trying to be nice to say it wasn't you but it's totally you.

Ford offers everything from affordable to luxury. Tesla offers luxury priced EVs only that the mass market can't afford and a technology that scares away those who aren't tech savvy. So yeah... The charts are meaningless.

Ford, GM, dodge/Chrysler brands are 120 years old. So...Tesla is a new company. Model 3 and Y the closest to "affordable" they offer only came out in the last 4 and 2 years respectively.

I have not read every ones responses but to me the only reason they should be limiting option packages is to concentrate on getting as many cars out on the road with the fewest defects.

so one drive package, AWD and extended battery And then focus on making sure technology and fit and finish are perfect.

seems to be the tact European car companies take and makes sense to me.

So. Facts be damned. And back to the anti-EV lobbying plot when you earlier said leave politics out of it. Which is it?

Tesla has been around since I was like 29 and I’m 47 now ?. And they’ve been mass-producing (sort of) Model S’ since 2012, right? That’s a damn decade. And the paint and panel gaps are still laughable.

They were able to sell EVs in mass quantities because the original S was a game changer. But guess what? They blew their chance to capitalize on the monopoly they had and now the flood of EVs is upon them. Ones that look better, drive better, offer further range, better quality and will likely beat them in semi autonomous driving. FSD for $10K anybody?

And go read some early-mid ‘90s Popular Mechanics or Car and Driver articles about the GM EV-1, Ford Ranger EV or Chrysler EV minivans. Those articles will shed light on other reasons EVs took another 2 decades to take off. Hint(s)- range, cost, demand.

What you’re saying is literally the opposite of what the European brands do. Not to mention a sure way to sell less cars. ?

BMW is releasing an EV car similar to X5 , not many trims and will be a ton of money, cheaper versions and M version will come out later, Macan releasd Macan S and Turbo in the first year and then released base car and GT a year or two later. selling the most cars initially is not always the right goal. Getting it right is. They aren’t perfect for sure. they are lower volume car makers to begin with and probably easier to roll out a new model with different expectations.

Tesla is an American company, investing in R+D and Technology development in the USA where most aren't. The cars are built in US factories with US workers they added supercharger everywhere that requires hiring workers and hey, they developed the EV market, we wouldn't have Mach-E if there wasn't a Tesla first.

What is Ford doing? Just saying, let's not immediately discount Tesla's model.
When Tesla has been around for 100 years, then you can tell me how amazing their business model actually is. The only reason Tesla is on the map at all right now is that they were the only option the “true believers” had for a decade.
