NOTE: In working with two others on this mod, I've come to find out the latest version of FORScan (2.3.49) needs to be updated to be compatible with the '22 model Mach-E. This mod works on the '21's as you are able to modify the IPMA but are not able to on the '22's just yet.

I’ve had several members DM me over the past couple of months about this mod and when I would post a write up but as usual life gets in the way. I travel a lot and have other projects I am always working on with my cars (most recently configuring an air suspension for the Mach-E) and really don’t think about write ups all that often. I hardly ever take photos of my mods while doing them unless requested. I didn’t take any photos of this one but I will include some screen shots from the repair manual. With the new Sync 4 update coming, there will supposedly be a button on the home screen to activate the cameras so not sure if anyone wants to go ahead with this DIY project, but if so, keep reading. This mod will also work on other Ford cars with Sync 4 (Lightnings).

I’d recommend only doing this project if you don’t mind pulling panels apart and doing a bit of wiring. It is not difficult (personal opinion) just takes a bit of time and must be able to use FORScan. Bottom line, it is extremely simple. Run a wire from the IPMA module in the rear of the car to an area you want to install a momentary switch (or you can use the Parking switch) and change one line of code in the IPMA module with FORScan. That’s it. With that said, I am going to give a more detailed write up below.

I started this project over a year ago when I installed my sub. I had to run the wire for the remote level (volume) control from the sub in the cargo area to the center console. At the same time I figured out what wire was needed to activate the cameras and it would have to come from the IPMA (Image Processing Module A) which is behind the left rear quarter panel. That camera wire sat for about 6 months untouched in the center console until I got around to figuring out how to activate it. Looking at the wiring diagrams for both the Mach-E and other Ford vehicles that have a hard switch for the camera (including Lightning's with the 12" display) it became more clear that this was the only wire I needed and the rest had to be done in FORScan. After looking at the IPMA in FORScan, I found what I needed to activate the cameras. This whole thing is fairly simple, when a ground is applied to that added wire in the IPMA, and one code is changed in that module, it activates the camera. Same principle as adding the hard button lift gate switch I posted a DIY thread almost 2 years ago but no FORScan coding was necessary on that one.

Now, on to how to do this mod…. First thing you need to do is pull apart the left side rear quarter panel. Just the rear part of it (don’t take the entire thing out) enough to get to the IPMA that is mounted on the wheel well behind the panel. Remove the Black, 20 pin connector attached to the IPMA. You need to purchase a female pin connector then install it into vacant hole number 10 in the connector (which is across from hole 20 that has a Brown wire with blue stripe). Plug the connector back into the IPMA. You can test to make sure your connector pin is making good contact by using a volt meter. With the car off, there should be no voltage reading but with it on, should get about 12 volts. I buy these Motorcraft pigtails as they have a short wire already attached (DU2Z-14474-CA). The wire is a 22 gauge and you can use that size or larger attached to the pigtail to run up to the front of the car.

Run the wire from the IPMA under the door sill plates or however you want, to a location that you want to install a small momentary switch. Connect the wire to one side of the switch and find a ground and connect it to the other side. Instead of a momentary switch, I used the Parking switch (next to the hazard switch) to turn on my cameras. I never use the self parking feature because I can park the car faster plus my custom wheels are flush with my fender trim and the car self parks too close to the curb for me. I don’t want the possibility of damaging the wheels. If you want to use the Park switch, only one connection needs to be made (don’t have to find a ground wire). Start at one corner and pull up the console top (it has 4 clips and entire top lifts right up). There is a 4 wire connector attached to the Park/Hazard switch assembly. Remove this connector to work with it easier. Peel back some of the cloth wire protector so you have about 2 inches of wire to work with. Find the Green wire with the brown stripe and cut it about 1 1/2” away from the connector. Attach the wire you ran from the IPMA to this wire going to the Park switch connector. Tape off the other end of the GR/BN wire. You can always reconnect the two wires later if you want to go back to stock. That’s it for the wiring.

With some help from Livnitup's FORScan module chart he posted over on the Lightning forum, I was able to figure out what line need to be changed in the IPMA module. Open FORScan (if not familer with FORScan, you can find how to use it on this forum or the web) and run the IPMA module config. Go to line 706-15-01 xx2x xxxx xxxx and replace the 2 with a 3. Do not change any other digits in that line. Write to the module and you are done. The camera will come on anytime you push your momentary switch or the parking switch as long as the car is going 5 mph or less. You can configure the camera to come on at any speed but you only get the REAR camera and it is not worth much to have the rear camera on while driving down the road especially at night. All you get is glaring lights. If anyone really wants this I can list the configuration but I don’t think it’s worth using. I've been asked if there is a way to make the cameras come on sooner when approaching an obsticle but I have not looked into it. If I get some free time I will.

Sorry for this long winded DIY thread for such a simple mod. Once I get going on writing, I don’t stop. Now on to write up another DIY mod on how I replaced the 23’ charging cord on my ChargePoint HomeFlex with a 40’ only because been asked about this one too.

EDIT:

In changing that one line in FORScan to enable the camera hard button, it disabled the camera soft button in the controls section of Sync. Since that button no longer works, I decided to remove it from the controls menu. To do so, in FORScan, under the APIM module configuration (As Built) go to line 7D0-01-04 xxxx-xxBx-xxxx and make sure you put a "B" in that position in place of what you have (which is most likely an "F").

I had forgot to mention, when activating the camera hard switch, you get the 360˚ view as default in the card above the camera video just as you do when using the soft button so nothing changes there.

I had said earlier that you can enable the rear camera to display while driving at any speed which I find useless for me. I finally did get the front camera to work at any speed by enabling Rock Crawl mode (for Broncos) but there are two issues with this. 1. The camera comes on as soon as you turn on the car and stays on unless you shift to reverse or turn it off with the switch. 2. The default view is not with the 360˚ card above the camera video but with the standard obstacle view. You have to select the 360˚ button to get that view. I have spent quite a bit of time trying all different combinations to get the front camera to come on with the 360˚ view in Rock Crawl mode but I don't think it's going to happen.

Thank you Mark for this excellent detailed writeup! This is one of the most useful mods IMHO (especially for those of us with a useless parking switch), and I plan to implement it.

I mentioned this as an edit in the write up but thought I would post it here too.

You're full of great mods!

Is this something that Ford could render useless in a software update?

What was the route you used to run the wire from the back left to the center console?

I highly doubt it will become useless in an update but anything is possible. The APIM and it's configuration is not exclusive to the Mach-E. If it happens to change, it can be changed back. So far in the last couple of months, it has not changed.

I ran the wire behind the rear quarter trim panel towards the front of the car coming down into and underneath the rear door kick plate, then under the B pillar, under the front door kick plate, behind the drivers kick panel, across and under the carpet to the center console, then came back to the middle of the console and popped up under the center where the gear shift and parking controls are.

John, you're too funny. Really, it was one wire and change one line in FORScan.
But *you* figured it out and wrote it up. No one else did.

I rest my case.

Soo... @Ford Motor Company ....are you taking notes to pass along to the devs?

It's been said many times on this forum and on the Lightning forum as well. We need a one button solution to turn on the cameras (360 view would be optimal) when approaching a parking space to ensure proper alignment in the space and for obstacle avoidance.

My previous F-150(s) all had a hard button above the center screen bezel just for this purpose, but neither the Mach-E or the Lightning now have that. A soft button on the top of the 15" screen somewhere would be perfect...and actually not that hard to do.

People are actually engineering hardware solutions and sharing them because of their need for this.

Please do something to make this happen. It would make a nice present as an APIM update for this holiday season.

If I was a software developer in the SYNC division of Ford, this thread would embarrass me. But it seems they don't care.

Something else came up last night. John (JohnFoxeSheets) texted me asking if it was possible to tap into a wire at the IPMA without having to run a wire up to the console. He saw on the wiring diagram that the GR/BN wire I tapped into at the Park Aid switch runs back to the IPMA. This might work so if you plan to use the Park Aid switch to activate the cameras, you might not have to run a wire to the front of the car.

EDIT: There has been a member who hooked up the wiring in this way and had issues with it. He has a 2022 and I have a 2021. Not sure if there is a difference in the modules but he could not get it to work like that. I think the safest way right now is to run a wire from the IPMA to your own momentary switch or to the park aid switch and not use the park aid.
