Other's would say that the idiots are the ones in the left lane disrespectfully staying in it instead of yielding to faster traffic by moving over. In many states, including California, the law states that the duty of slower traffic to keep right applies "notwithstanding the prima facie speed limits."

It's even worse in California because the truck speed limit can be up to 30mph lower (ie. Tejon Pass 35 vs 65) than that of passenger vehicles. This means that no one moves over because they don't want to go 35, but they also don't want to go 65. It's the most annoying and frustrating thing ever. On top of it, semi's pass each other, like leapfrog, going just 3 miles faster than the other holding up everything. Driving in Nevada, Arizona, Utah etc where it's all the same limit is soooo much better.

Lastly, some states still have laws on the books making it ILLEGAL to pass on the right, so moving over is that much more important and can really piss people off if you don't.

Since you're in Maryland, here's the law in your state for reference: https://law.justia.com/codes/maryland/2010/transportation/title-21/subtitle-3/21-301/

Agreed. Mixed speed limits aren’t a good thing imo. The I-5 drag strip from Tracy south to just before the Grapevine was a great example (back in the day as we haven’t lived there in 18 years or so.).

Drove it yesterday, 7 hours, from Palm Desert to Sacramento and I was swearing 90% of the time. It's hell!

Exactly. If I'm going a good bit over the speed limit, just because that's "not fast enough for you" doesn't mean you get to ride my tail. Fuck off and pass me another way as you drive completely irresponsibly on public roads, Speed Racer.
Don't ride in the passing lane genius

But if I'm going over the speed limit, passing every car on my right, does that give someone the right to ride my tail? No, it doesn't, genius. If you ride my tail I'm going to piss you off even more...if you flash your lights from a safe distance, then I'll move over.
Can't wait for you to tailgate me in NJ ?

I don’t condone tailgating but isn’t it etiquette to let fast moving traffic by? NJ is a keep right, pass left state. Whether I’m going the speed limit or 20 over, it‘s my job to move over. I’m not there to enforce speed limits thats a job for the police.

Brake checking is illegal in many states and if it had caused an accident you may have been found at fault.

I understand how annoying this is but would it have hurt to just let the driver pass?

It depends on how quickly you are passing the cars on the right. If you are inching past them, you are basically going the same speed and should move over to let faster moving traffic pass. If you are flying by them, then it won't take long to pass and then you can move over when there is a gap.

Most people will wait for you to pass cars on the right if you are moving quickly by them. If you are not, then you really are the problem, not the people behind you.

I think people have a responsibility to drive safely. I would consider the following unsafe driving:
-tailgating under any circumstance
-not keeping up with traffic
-driving too slow in the left lane
-driving too fast in the left lane
-brake checking

We all have different definitions of too slow and too fast… but in general I don’t feel an obligation to clear the passing lane if I’m going 80mph. A lot of cars start to lose stability in their suspension around those speeds so in general I don’t think it’s safe to go consistently faster. If it’s a medical emergency, you ought to be in an ambulance not a MME.

Notwithstanding, I will clear the passing lane if I see someone tailgating at that speed - not because I think he’s in the right, but because I want to get as far away from that unsafe driver as I possibly can.

Ive never really understood brake checking - why would you risk a rear end collision to teach someone a lesson? Yeah, you really “showed him” when the end of your car gets smashed up

MME’s are not being sold to idiots.
Some drivers are just idiots and they buy and drive every make and model of ICE, HYBRID, and full EV vehicle.

The type of behavior that you experienced on the road shouldn’t be a surprise to you.

I agree, if you’re inching past traffic then move over, but cruising past other cars is fine. It’s called the passing lane, not the Autobahn.

People think they’re F1 drivers when they probably can’t even parallel park.

Going fast does not equal good driver.

The worst is when I'm in the left cruising past someone & when I'm up far enough to hit their peripheral vision they speed up equal to my speed. Then here comes mr. tailgatey flashy lights right on my bumper, so I try to speed up to pass the fool on my right, but they speed up some more & I'm boxed in. Not wanting to go 90+ MPH to pass them, I try to slow down to get in behind them, but before I can safely move over mr. tialgatey flashy lights is now in the right lane flipping me off. This ever happen to anyone else?

Yes. My problem is the self imposed 80 mph limit. Since I usually set the cruise to 80, if the guy on the right decides to speed up and match my speed I have to slow down to get over. That annoys the crap out of me. People just need to pick a speed and don't speed up just because someone is passing.

You never really know why someone is in a hurry. Could be going to the hospital, could have seen someone breaking into their house on their camera, or could have just caught his wife cheating.

Whatever the reason, never brake check and just move over!
spoken like a true slave to speed, why not just obey traffic laws so we all get to our destination in piece not peices

Because that would take too long. ?

Do you HONESTLY drive under the speed limit everywhere you go and wish everyone else did? Traffic is bad enough as it is.

His point wasn’t about speeding, it’s about moving over and NOT brake checking. That’s the safest thing to do.
