Ummm, what?

So I've never looked at the MachE sub-reddit before.

I did for the first time today and just came across this post, from today, and the link to the Ford press release, also from today (below).

High points from announcements and the Twitter Spaces session:

  • Gen 1 cars, from 2024 forward will get an NACS adapter. Tesla is working on that adapter now, targeting production "early next year"..
  • Gen 2 cars forward will drop J1772/CCS and change to NASD.
    • Jim Farley: "We're totally committed to the NACS interface going forward."
  • Cost
    • Elon: "It will, not be cost prohibitive. It'll be something's quite affordable, you know, in the hundreds of dollars range. You know, it's an adapter, so its not super expensive."
  • Software
    • Elon offered to help Ford, and the industry in the software space, comparing what Tesla could do to being the "Android" of the industry. Android being the base operating system that Samsung and others customize to create their own experiences.
    • OP note: This would be EXTREMELY difficult as automotive software is so tied to the firmware, which is unique to the OEM suppliers or makers of the hardware (Bosch, Denso, Delphi, Visteon, Magna, Eaton, LG, Vale, BorgWarner, etc.). A key to Tesla's software superiority is that they have brought so much of the hardware development and supply in-house. So many of the parts that Tesla uses (motors, hydraulic manifolds, processors/silicon, onboard chargers, inverters, etc.) are developed and made by Tesla, where most other manufacturers source those parts from the BorgWarners, LG's, Visteons, etc.)
  • Existing Ford Chargers
    • Jim Farley: "Yeah, everything will still work, so we should be good with that."

I do not see them getting rid of CCS, the NACS is small enough to not make the port too crowded. Getting rid of CCS would be a huge step backwards.
Agree. They won't get rid of CCS. The government is backing it, it will be the standard.

It would be sweet if they put the Tesla chargeport in driver rear quarter panel (already has this in China).
I think it will definitely be closer to one end of the car than current. Just because of current SC cable length.

Which end? ??‍♂

They'd have to route the wire all the way up front. I don't see that happening.

I've never had a problem with him. I've always supported his vision for EVs. I said some people, not all. My original point was that there are people who are intolerant of others beliefs and that's sad because it doesn't help promote EVs.

I would say that based on the type of forum we are on it lends itself to one side, so those of the other who participate are fairly tolerant and accepting.
I don't wanna derail the thread further, but the people he regular interacts with on Twitter are of the "yikes" variety who would label him a liberal commie if they ever watched a Tesla investor presentation where he talks about saving the environment by getting rid of fossil fuels. I'll leave it at that, it's not so black and white and I think we can agree on that.

There will be a 12 inch by 24 inch charging port door, with 3 different adapters and a 6 question FordPass process to pick the right one.
And a whole new set of useless charging fault error codes. ?

I was thinking that too, leave the CCS where it is and make a separate rear port for NACS.

The Leaf always had two connectors, J1772 and Chademo.

ONLY if it flips out the side of the car and can inflict door dings! And can be trigged to open from FP only if using PaaK and geofenced NOT to work at home.
But it won't be available on job 1 cars. ;)

I see your point and I agree with it for the most part. I think Elon would probably better serve the cause of EVs if he’d spend less time on his social agenda.

Everyone on this forum always complains about CCS fast charging and says "superchargers are flawless".

Elon and Jim announce a partnership and some of those same people cry because they are intolerant to others ideals.

Quite sad that they can't be happy for the advancement of EV tech.
Honestly, I am both "the Tesla supercharging network is excellent," and "Do I really want more of my money funding Elon Musk and the hateful things he says and does?"

From a tech standpoint, this is a smart move. The Tesla connector is smaller, lighter, and more streamlined than CCS connectors. But from a moral standpoint, I get why some people are very disappointed in this move.

Smart move by Ford, had to bend the knee to survive here this is huge.
I actually read it as the opposite. NACS is not an open standard, and this just complicates things for customers, Tesla is even already adding CCS adaptors to their network, every other network uses CCS, how many J1772 level 2s are out there? etc. Unless Ford knows something we don't about the whole industry suddenly switching and Tesla giving up control of the standard, this doesn't make much sense, however much more elegant the plug might be.

Isn't that what they're already doing in China?
