More like 5 years or more. There is currently a 25% tariff on cars made in China. BYD is in the preliminary stages of scoping out production facilities in Mexico in order to avoid the tariff, but no way they can do that and hit the market in 2 years.
In terms of timing, you might be right... but BYD already has a bus plant in Mexico and the Chinese car makers move at a speed that is hard to imagine in Europe and the US.

That's part of it, but there's still that huge $7500 (or $3750, depending on trim) tax credit differential on top of that ($15,000/$11,250 differential vs 2022). That's an anchor hanging around Ford's neck until they can get the tax credit back. And even then, it'll only narrow the gap some. Ford getting $7500 and Tesla getting zero (2021/22) is what it took for Ford to be at least semi-competitive with Tesla on EVs.
I wonder if the US makers will permanently need the $7.5K to compete... electric gas or other (sort of a UAW offset)

The rate that the Chinese have penetrated the Euro market is shocking.

A new GT with Bluecruise is less than $2,000 cheaper than when I took delivery of my '21 GT with Bluecruise.

~$65,500 MSRP - $7,500 tax credit = $58,000 in Dec 2021
$56,795 with today's pricing.

These are painful adjustments for anyone who paid at the peak of the price increases or significant markup, but otherwise I'm not overly concerned relative to what I ended up paying.

FYI the price reductions only apply to 2023 vehicles. Job 1 and Job 2 will be priced the same now, even though Job 1 had more features like included charger and BlueCruise on higher trims.

Job 1 GTPEs has been reduced in price by -$12,600. The $7500 lease bonus applies, so that means you could lease a GTPE for only $50k.

If buying, you get the retail incentives of $1000 for ER premium and $3000 for GTs. 0% APR for 72 months financing.

The good deals to clear out the inventory have finally come.

But if you lease. The. You get 7500 on top of the 58k price bringing it down to 50k. Just buy the car at the end of the lease if you want to keep it.

dang, i just bought up my 2021 options premium rwd std....had these price cuts/lease/cash deals been in affect a month ago, i probably would've traded it in for a 2024 premium rwd extended. oh well.

Well there's always Mexico to solve the UAW piece. But that's only part of the cost disadvantage on EVs. US-made ICE vehicles sell quite well, despite the higher labor costs, so they can often offset that with the advantage of local production. And Tesla also makes cars in the US, albeit with a labor cost that's structured better.

It appears there's 4 areas that make Ford uncompetitive on EV manufacturing costs:

1. Labor costs (as noted)
2. Battery costs (Tesla making their own cuts the costs quite a bit)
3. Manufacturing process (Tesla uses more automation and less labor in the actual assembly)
4. Design (Tesla uses things like gigapress, 48v architecture, makes and programs their own modules, etc)

Ford can get closer by dealing with one or two of those, but until they can match Tesla on all 4, they'll have a hard time catching up. Their battery plant is supposed to open next year at Blue Oval City. That will help #2 (maybe #1 but I doubt it). Presumably this skunkteam thing is working on #3 and #4, but that's years off. And the UAW will scream at anything that reduces jobs (the very thing Ford needs to do to compete with Tesla). The UAW is already talking about striking Ford again over Farley's comments about needing to rethink where they manufacturer.

So they finally brought down the GT to the mid 50s, that should be the MSRP at release. Well done Ford, hopefully it's no too late.

I've been saying for months now the Select needs to start below $40k to be more competitive!

Does this mean I'll be able to get a lightly used '23 Mach-E for $20k now? haha.

If they keep dropping the price, I might return my car when Ford Options is up next month!

Though, I'm not seeing these prices updated yet.
i think we will all have to return them if we used that financing plan. No chance the market price will be as high as the buyout that is on paper - so they either negotiate with us or take the cars back. Why would we pay more than market price for a used car with a battery that we don't know what long term will look like?

Right. Especially given my lighter driving during the pandemic, I have barely 25k miles on mine, and the KBB value (pre-markdown) is almost exactly the same as the balloon payment. I don't think I can allow myself to pay a balloon payment for a car I know I could purchase for less .

But is it more? My balloon is $24k. I don't think I can buy one for less than that.

Still a ton of older job 1 builds on dealer lots priced $4000-5000 higher. I haven't seen anything to suggest additional discounts for those. The dealers I have talked to all refuse to sell those for less than they sell their job 2 builds for.
