Old house owner used to have hot tub in the backyard. Its long gone but the connections/breakers are still in place
Including 6/3 wire. Can I just remove everything from the smaller receptacle and replace it with Hubbell 14-50? Is this relatively straightforward DIY?

Those are old breakers and wires. They haven't been torqued in ages. The circuit may be fine for your application if you use a lower power charger like the 32A Ford Mobile Charger. 6/3 is insufficient for 48A. However, the precise wire requirement will depend on the load planned and the length of the run. You probably should replace the old breakers, though.

Watch this for most of your answers.

I would do it. With #6 wire, you should be fine running 40a continuous on that breaker.

I'd have an electrician evaluate what needs to be done.

This is a very good suggestion. More importantly, ask an electrician with experience in wiring EV chargers.

If you have to ask the internet for advice on electrical wiring, you probably shouldn't be doing it yourself.

You need to leave the spa panel and its GFCI breaker, don’t replace it. The receptacle needs to be in its own weatherproof box.

I second the suggestion to have it evaluated by an electrician.

A 4 wire cable is required for this installation. You need a ground wire in addition to the neutral.

There is a bare copper ground wire that you can see behind the other conductors. ??

Then that will do. I think I can see it looking closer but it is not really clearly visible.

Why not just hardwire it out the bottom to the breaker in the subpanel? Why deal with a plug?

#6 should be ok if It is copper. If you have aluminum conductor it might still be ok if the insulation is rated for 90C.

I third the suggestion of an electrician. He/she may notice things in person we are missing. Cheap insurance in the end.
