The reality is that the vast majority of automobile buyers (or just people in general), fit into the following descriptions:

- Too lazy to do research
- Naive about pricing, markups, how to buy an automobile in general (or anything else)
- Not smart enough

I have a relative that bought a fancy Jaguar a few decades ago, which I found out about afterwards. She of course paid full sticker. I blew a gasket. Hung up the phone, called the dealership (in a ritzy Florida city) and put on a whole story about what I was looking for, how I had cash, and wanted to pay several thousand below MSRP, TOMORROW. They immediately agreed. Called back my relative and told her what I had done, and she was speechless. Of course she also had no clue that Jaguars of that generation would cost a small fortune in repairs. And it did.

She got a Fusion some years back, and now drives a Fusion Hybrid.

So much truth here.....Cant count the amount of times a facebook or forum post ask the most simplest question that can be answered by a simple google search. People are very lazy when it comes to research these days.

You should be a little more generous in your assessment.

Many are willing to do some research, they simply don't have guidance of what research to do.

The order page looks like any other online fixed-price order page they have encountered. There isn't a clear explanation for many of the items. Which should they investigate? Especially when they have read stories that Ford will be behaving differently this time, without ADM slipped in the fine print.

My order I did back in April has always had that line but it's been $0. I have some PDFs I captured over the months to make sure it doesn't magically change.

Look again. That line is there wether there was ADM or not.
Yes, the ADM line is there whether there is ADM or not, but whether or not there is ADM is based on the dealer you chose.

It's a buying process 100% designed to make it hard. On one hand, that's because car buying is a messy business, on the other hand, it's because of a standardized approach to manipulate you out of a few dollars (petty as F).

There are always going to be people who fall below the median, in many areas. Should they not buy cars? Should they have to be manipulated when they're probably already at a disadvantage, economically, socially, intellectually, some other? Should these people who likely need the most help, also be allowed to be the most vulnerable, when they may already be struggling to make ends meet?

I used to be very Libertarian, but it just doesn't work. I'm not sure what does, and I'm not advocating for Socialism, I'm just saying in this specific venue, it's a mess, and it really doesn't have to be.

You ok?

We are talking about ADM on a vehicle which the dealer makes $1 on. While I agree that 20k over is just plain stupid, no one HAS to buy a MachE. Many of us, throughout life, had to purchase "less than desirable" cars. However, through work and perseverance some of us can now can afford a MachE. We can't all have what we want, when we want it.

The point many others made here is, be smart, do research and don't settle when there's other dealerships out there that would gladly accept an order for 0 ADM. We have the power to choose, no one is stopping us.

Nah. I was too generous. Been on a truck forum for 8 years. I see the reality. People making decisions based on monthly payments. People taking zero percent financing even when shown the math that they should take the non-subsidized rate, higher rebate, and refinance with a credit union the next week.

Fritts Ford in Riverside, CA. To be fair, they did not add any ADM on my first order.

@PaperMach-E What dealership is it so I can add it to my list of dealers charging ADM. I have some which are adding 20k!

I tried to order another Mach E and I noticed a new Line Item called "Difference from MSRP" (see below).

I think this is actually the "dealer selling price" which has been in place all along, allowing a dealer to markup over msrp at time of online order. This:

I can assure you they are making more than $1 on that "invoice"/MSRP-priced MME. I got cozy with the finance manager at BMW a few weeks ago. He showed me he made $850 off the lease deal we agreed to. Then we talked about holdbacks and bonuses. He said that if they meet their metrics they can make back up to 5% of the MSRP of the vehicle in holdbacks. And promptly told me that they always meet their metrics as the owners/managers do not tolerate not doing so.

I would be willing to bet that Ford is not much different.

Because it's the dealer you have chosen.

Mine Doesnt.
the one caution to that. My dealer clearly had a $5k markup when I ordered online back in january. I spoke with the general manager soon after and he committed to msrp and xplan which is what I got. This is not written in stone by any means

Poppycock.

What about furniture and mattress buying? Ever try to compare mattresses in different stores?

House buying? People not understanding that agents work for sellers?

I could go on, but the reality is simple. Most people are too lazy, "too busy", or too stupid.

George Carlin once said “Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.”
