L2 charging speed recently dropped 33%

Hi! I thought a solid amber light on the EVSE meant that the car wasn't accepting all available / the car is limiting itself. And a blinking yellow light meant there was something wrong with the EVSE?

My friends Tesla charged and pulled ~7kWh just fine. (40 Amp Switch)

The Ford EVSE takes some time before it overheats. So you would need to charge your friend's Tesla for more than a few minutes to see it slow down. I think every time you see the yellow LED, the charger is overheating and it is slowing the charge rate.

No, amber indicates that the EVSE itself (or its AC plug) is overheating. There is a chart in the owner‘s manual with a matrix telling what the light combinations mean.

I started this whole diabolic with taking the EVSE in to the Ford dealership and they said it passed their diagnostics (but they didn't actually tell me what they did). I can absolutely try that again!

My friend probably charged his Tesla for about 45 mins to an hour, but to be honest the garage door was probably open and it may not have been as hot that day. Would the ambient temperature in my garage effect my EVSE overheating?

It's a little strange... now that I'm sitting here watching my car charge... last night when I plugged in the yellow light on the EVSE went on immediately after plugging in and I pulled about 2-3kW. This morning, I plugged in pulled about 7kW for 10 minutes (no yellow light). Then after about ten minutes the yellow light flipped on and now I'm pulling 3kW again. Nothing is even warm to the touch.

You guys are seriously alot more helpful than the Ford Dealership that won't even take my problem seriously. So thank you!

The Ford dealer needs a 14-50/240V plug in order to really test your EVSE. If they do not, they are not likely going to be able to replicate the failure. Although I had mine overheat on 120V when it was really hot in the parking garage.

When mine was overheating, I put it inside the house on an extension cord and it started working properly again. Others have reported that aiming a fan at the EVSE can keep it cool enough. It really depends on how high the ambient temperature is.

This is a common problem with the Ford EVSE. Others have successfully gotten their dealers to replace it under warranty. I have not tried, although I might now that others have been able to do it. My dealer has be great, so I bet they will replace it.

My only suggestion at this point is to find (or purchase) another EVSE to verify that your car charges properly.
Your FMC is definitely defective, but I don’t know how to help you convince the dealer.

OK but the Ford EVSE will definitely overheat when it is 100 F ambient temp. And it won't cause any error messages. It will just charge more slowly, exactly like you are experiencing.

10 - 13C (50 55F) and not too HOT here! Had been working fine for 2.5 years with this set up. Go in for door fault requiring parts replaced and get charging updates as a bonus (missing schedule). Ever since it now takes hours longer to charge.

I wouldn’t go that far. I had my charge port replaced and it didn’t solve anything. ?‍

What is the answer? Most fixes that I have required have taken 2 to over 4 months if they get fixed at all. Not looking good again. @Ford Motor Company some insight and understanding where we are going on this would be appreciated. Please DM me as this is not the experience I had hoped for.

No, I called my dealer and told them that my car had recently started charging slower on lvl 2. They said they have had a couple cars come in for the same thing and that they had checked with Ford which told them they are aware of it and they are working on an OTA update to fix it. I do wish @Ford Motor Company would comment on here about it so we didn't have to bug the dealers to find out about it.

My dealer said the same thing, kind of. They said ford is aware and working on it.

Communication from Ford would be great but they just don’t get it. They would rather we waste our time with hundreds of posts guessing what might be wrong .

Well they're probably going to roll all the issues into one SOBDM update that fixes multiple things.

Ford knows about it the derate issue, we just need to be patient for the OTA to come in a month or two. In the meantime it's okay to keep charging. It will just take longer.
