Hey all,

I have a BlendMount but the detector does not work well at all behind the windshield and not in the "Black dot space" on the windshield. I have an Escort 9500iX and the OEM suction cup mount doesn't hold it at the right angle to lock in place, so the detector constantly slides off the mount.

I've found a few potential solutions. While they wont be nearly as pretty as the BlendMount, please let me know your opinion on feasibility.
@roadshow I know you were looking into mounting into the headliner using something like a visor clip. Please let me know what you've found that may work.

1.) Here's a clip that will mount gopro-style that I was going to use as a starting point: https://smile.amazon.com/LycoGear-Detector-Adhesive-Passport-Detectors/dp/B08XYC5TDX

2.) Here a solid (but large) suction cup mount I would stick to the right of the passenger side black-dot area on the windshield. I would then position it so the arm comes straight to the left, holding the radar detector high up into the black-dot area while still allowing me access to the buttons on the top of the detector. My mirror tap also comes out the right side so it should all line up perfectly. I chose this one out of everything I've found because it will allow that horizontal mounting. If it's veritcally mounted, the radar detector will fall below the black-dot area on the windshield.
*Added bonus, I can take this and stick it to my pano roof center-right behind my head to get some gopro footage, too! :)

Thoughts? Anything better?

Well, I went with this one (because it came with more accessories I may use) and I'm afraid I don't think it will work that well, although I am going to try it: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PMQ4BZV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Basically, the mount for the Escort piece screws onto the camera (screw) mount, making it stick down too far, so I think the detector will end up sitting too low relative to the black dot space on the windshield.

I will either buy the other mount I listed above because it looks to be slimmer and smaller, or I'll just try to use the stick on mount from the first pic. I'll test fit that today too and try to grab some pics.

I've used these in almost all of my vehicles. I'm not claiming this one will work for your detector or application, but I like them the best because I can keep it off the window completely which makes it easier to clean. Also the suction cup mounts seem to always fall off in 115 degree heat.

The mounts were always too "bouncy" in my opinion so under the clip that sits on top of the detector I put a clear gel door bumper and that fixed it.

Ya, I have a blendmount but it doesn't work because the placement behind this windshield makes it extremely difficult for the detector to pickup gps or radar.

I did a bit more testing on my R7. I found it interesting that while I'm still getting warnings, they're mainly coming through the side windows and rear. Obviously not super effective and killing optimal range. I think the only option other than having the glass replaced, which may be the cheapest solution, is to go with a grill mounted detector. Not cheap at all, but neither are tickets in California.

I know. :\- I'm also looking into installed detectors now. :-\

My next attempt with be another suction cup mount. The issue is that square spot on the windshield is way too small to fit the mounted detector in there. :-\ I'm trying to find a mount that will let me put it upside down (below the black square), and use double-sided tape on the bottom of the detector versus the built-in mount slot on the top. It should work, if the mounts would get the right angle.

What kind of detectors do you guys have? I've tested with an Escort Redline 360C and a Max 360C with the mount that I linked a bit up the thread and it works fine. I don't have any issues with the effectiveness, gps, views etc.

Mounted below the rearview it's essentially blind to the front with the IRR windshield. If it's going off, it's because of radiation reaching it from the side or rear windows when you are really close to the source. Do a proper long-range test with a source several miles away, and swap the same detector into another car with a regular windshield to compare. I bet you notice a huge difference.

I've done some testing and concluded there is severe attenuation everywhere else but the small black areas. Your detection range would be less than half behind the IRR windshield. Only way I see to mount a detector in the small black space is upside down or attached to the headliner somehow, but getting the detector properly leveled with the horn completely in the RF clear zone looks very difficult. Remote mounted behind the pony up front is probably going to be the best option.

Gotcha ... thanks for the information. Now that you explained that and I think about it, the only times I've noticed mine going off is rear radar, which might explain something, but then again I didn't notice any oncoming CHP. I assume the rear isn't IRR since I have no issue with rear detection.

Yeah, the rear and side windows are fine. The windshield blocks. :-\ I'm running the Escort 9500Xi and I'm back to the stock suction cup mount (in teh black area) and mirror tap for now.

I assume the front of the detector is below the black then? If so do you assume the radar will enter through the black and just be close enough?

It's strange that my GPS works fine mounted below the mirror. I get accurate speeds and never lose GPS signal like when I'm in a parking garage (when it says "GPS Signal has been lost").

I would like to put in a Max CI 360 but I just can't come to justify spending 3500 on it "yet".

Yeah, I'd love an installed one, too...but justifying that cost is certainly tough. haha. I doubt I'll ever do it.

The bottom of the detector is pretty much lined up with the bottom of the black rectangle.

I was constantly losing GPS (or not getting any at all) when mounted below the mirror, and my Dragy also wouldn't work well, if at all, unless I held it on my door sill in the driver's side window. I may velcro that in the black area as well.

IRR windshield doesn't block radar though, does it? Maybe LIDAR if Laser is being used, but didn't think it should affect radar. Unless all the Ka band I've picked up has been from bouncing around in the car and hitting from rear.

I don't have one that tells me which direction the hit is from, and I have all bands turned off except for Ka. Might need to turn them back on and go by a speed sign nearby to test the performance from front.
