Which is Very Important if you are into drag racing SUV's
Simply clarifying that the ER battery alone would not increase performance as @DaMeatMan's post implied. Plus the drag racing stats are SUPER important to some forum users. ;)

While the ER RWD Mach-E isnā€™t a slow vehicle, you certainly donā€™t have to be a drag racer, or even someone with a particularly heavy foot, to appreciate the gain you get to go from 6.1 seconds 0 to 60 capability on the ER RWD to a vehicle that can do 4.8 seconds 0 to 60 with the ER AWD.

CR-V doesn't have Bluecruise..... I was dreaming about autopilot only on long trips...... It would be a shame to get the car with the feature like that and not be able to use it on long trips.
It doesn't. But adaptive cruise control and lane centering works very well, and I don't mind to keep my hands on the wheel (where else?), and it's better to lower the speed ahead of the sign that get caught in a speed trap relying on intelligent Bluecruise.

I will use MME for long trips when charging stations will be as common as gas station so no planning is necessary. But it's me. I'm not saying that this is an example to follow. The fact that majority of buyers picked extended battery makes perfect sense.

I gave a lot of thought to this. For 90% of my driving, SR would suffice. My longest drive usually involves a round trip from Colorado Springs to Denver (roughly 160-175 miles total).

BUT (there's always a but):
  • I live in Colorado Springs, and there aren't many DCFCs around here at all.
  • AWD is basically mandatory here given our weather.
  • It gets COLD in the winter (frequently sub-freezing temps from Nov-May)
  • If I do make a long round-trip drive, I want to make sure I have a little range left when I get home so I'm not locked into a charger.
So my rationale was to consider range starting from a typical 80% charge, and I chose the ER battery.

Having lived in SoCal for 18 years, I'd think the extended range would be less necessary given the availability of chargers, and you having an ICE vehicle for road trips as needed further reinforces the idea of SR being enough.
Also from Colorado Springs and ordered the ER AWD. The mach-e isn't big enough for long road trips with our family of 5 but we typically keep our cars for 10+ years so I went with the ER to account for cold weather and degradation of the battery over time.

General rule of thumb is to buy the absolute longest range you can afford. EPA figures are estimates based on a particular usage scenario, but weather (both cold and hot) and the way you drive, as well as age of vehicle, road conditions etc can result in dramatically different real world range figures.

The way I see it, you pay for the thing once so just swallow the added cost of the Extended range battery to ensure you get the type of lifetime experience you want to get out of the vehicle in any situation, and not just the ideal.

You will get over the sticker shock much sooner than expected lol. The added capacity also has an impact on performance as well, as the larger battery can deliver more power.

The other added benefit (and this is important) is that you are far less likely to NEED to go below 10% and above 80% or 90% which prolongs the life of the battery. Basically assume that you are only going to use about 70% of the battery to give yourself that top and bottom buffer. So 70% of 270 rated miles is 189 miles that you should be getting, (in ideal conditions) while being very kind and gentle on the battery.

Not to mention right now "fast charging" above 80% is not possible and it slows to a trickle at about 12kw once you hit 80%, so going from 80% to 100% WILL take 2 hours. Ford has mentioned they will push an update to allow you to fast charge up to 90% and then slow things down after that, but that is yet to come.
I looked at this math when I bought my MME. The AWD ER gets 270 mi. As you say, you only use about 70% of that or 189 mi. The RWD SR gets 230mi so I will use about 161. I don't think it's worth paying $5k and losing my state rebate of $750 just to get 28 more miles. Granted I will hate the extra stop on a trip over about 350 miles, but I only do that 1-2x per yr. I realize you can't go back and get the bigger battery later so you have to be sure. As far as resale, I keep my cars a long time so it's not a big deal. Realistically, battery tech is about to leap forward so every car today will have an outdated battery buy the time you sell. I also have a friend with a SR Tesla 3 and he is very happy with the range.

If you can afford the extra cost, even if you don't need it, go for the extended range . Maybe one day you will decide to take the vehicle on a road trip and you will not regret having chosen that model.

Trying to decide on standard range vs extended rangeā€¦ I live in Southern California (inland empire) the commute will be 100 miles round trip max and donā€™t see myself driving more that 180 miles in a day. We also have a minivan for the occasional road trip. So Iā€™m going back and forth between the premium standard range, premium extended range and the California route 1. Any thoughts ore appreciatedā€¦
What did you get? Weā€™ve had a SR & ER, both Premium AWD. The extra power on the ER is nice, but the SR was much lighter and seemed more nimble!

Put it this way. I've never regretted having too much range, but oftentimes cursed having to stop and charge because I didn't have enough to get where I wanted without a charge.

I ordered the Premium ER almost did CR1 but I was intrigued by the "better" headlights- nice to see another local on here!

People drove for years without AWD... you just don't need it.

My past few cars here in MI have NOT been AWD and I haven't needed it.
People get AWD in EV's I think for faster acceleration not for weather/road conditions it seems. I almost wish I'd bought the AWD just for driving through the Sierra's to visit my family but....seemed like a waste for a once a year trip.

Because 99% of my trips to soccer practice and tournaments will be less that 100 miles. I went for the smaller battery. The question I wonder about is how the weight of the smaller battery effects driving dynamics. The thing a lot of people talk about is how heavy a very large battery is.

Lighter car, with modifications over time, can I start to approximate the fun of my GolfR??

since 99% of my driving is less than 150 miles a day, I opted for the SR battery to :
- save money
- less weight for better performance and more miles/kWhr

The couple times a year I do a long trip, I have no problems planning charge stops every 100-150 miles instead of 200-250.

What I found planning my road trip from KC to Northeast PA (~1,100 miles) is that the ER may have knocked one charge stop off and lessened the amount of time at a few other stops. This may not be as big of an issue as the infrastructure gets better, but I didn't think an extra $6,000 for this trip 1-2x a year made sense to save 60-90 minutes on a 20 hour journey.

With that said, I think ER / SR debate is more relevant on frequent trips where that added range makes the difference between a charging stop or no charging stop at all. With that said, I am VERY happy with SR MME.

Iā€™m in Iowa, so colder weather. My niece just bought a SR MME. She wasnā€™t aware of cold weather affecting range. She only has an average commute of 30 miles per day and a lake house 40 miles one way, but is
ready looking for an ER to buy.
