When I had a Polestar 2 rental, I really enjoyed their dedicated camera button.

I forget to even check... Can we hit the steering wheel voice button and say something like "Camera On"?

Not sure, never tried as it was faster to just press the button on the screen.

Many people would get annoyed with the camera coming on every time they stop behind a car at a stoplight. But I'd happily turn that option on if that's what it took to get the camera screen to come on entering a parking space, or my garage. As long as it has a 1-touch exit button if I want to switch back to the radio or map or something.
My wife's car has a setting for the cameras to come on every time the vehicle speed drops below 5mph. At first, I thought this would be super annoying, but we actually got used to it very quickly and it's fantastic for parking. It's easy to exit the camera screen with one click if you don't want it there. I do wish the MME had this option.

Whut? How did you do this? Is there a thread?
I'd be interested in how you did this, not because I wouldn't use park assist but because we don't even get it anymore so the button is useless anyways.
Wow, I had no idea you could do that in FORScan. Do you know if there is a way to modify when the front camera comes on? For example, after being in reverse and going to drive, shift from rear to front camera on? Or at least increase the sensitivity of the front camera... I feel like I have to hit the freakin' wall before it comes on.
For you guys and everyone else that was interested in how I added the direct camera button, I finally made a DIY thread: https://www.macheforum.com/site/threads/adding-a-direct-camera-switch.23728/#post-552393. This mod will also work on the Lightning with the Sync 4 display. The Lightning with the regular display has a direct button for the cameras.

I don’t know… That sounds kind of annoying to me during day to day driving. Cams flicking on when stopping at every light / sign. I’m all for automatic but I’d like my automatic to be a bit smarter than this somehow.

I thought the same and was sure I’d turn it off after trying it. But it’s actually quite nice.

I think I'd be the same way. It does sound like it could be a little annoying in a way, but I think I'd get used to it and grow to actually kinda like seeing the camera view of the car in front and the car in back when stopped at a light. It's a little like the setting that already exists now for extending the camera screen time following putting it in Drive from Reverse until the we reach 5 MPH (or so). That was annoying the first time I tried it but now I kinda like it.

But that's also why such a change should be optional in the settings. Basically an "Automatic Camera Screen Distance" setting, with choices for 3 feet (like it seems to be now) or 10 feet. Those that find it annoying can just leave it set to 3 feet.

Seems like the system could identify a parking space by unbroken single lines on both sides, and turn the camera on much earlier. Wouldn’t work for parallel parking, but that should be recognizable from steering motions.

Does no good for a home garage though, which is one of the primary needs. And various other parking.

I'd go the other direction... have it come on by default, but look for smart exceptions for a stoplight in traffic. Like maybe tailights illuminated in front of the car?

Assuming it’s where you charge, that seems like the easiest place to auto activate the camera if the coders put a little thought into it.

That’s a good point. There are a number of refinements that could be made based upon home location. Another is making your home a “safe zone” where the walk away lock does not automatically engage. That’s also in the latest enhancement poll.

I agree. I think there’s a middle ground that would bring up the cams more quickly in parking situations (assuming there’s a curb or adjoining cars to detect) but not in regular traffic. 5-6 feet would do the trick. Giving a preferred distance setting, just like the collision warning, would probably work fine. But still give us the one-tap Home Screen access when needed.

I don't mind the size of the icons but for the love of god, please put them on the left side of the screen, closer to the driver. One would think that this is simple, common sense ergonomic design principles :(
It's OK for right hand drive cars ;) Seriously though it should be adapted for left hand drive and right hand drive.
