Yea I could see that for sure. I hate having what everyone else has.
That’s for certain.

I’ve been on vacation in Iceland for over a week.

I can’t count how many Teslas I’ve seen (way too many).

Had to take a picture of the ONE Mach E.

I chose the MME over a MY for several reasons:
  1. The Mach E looks so much better. This really isn't up for debate. The MY has very frumpy, androgenous, egg-shaped styling.
  2. The Mach E interior quality is far superior. The MY and M3 interior materials feel cheap and plastic-y, and stuff seems to break off easier if my friend's M3 is a fair example.
  3. The Mach E was several thousand cheaper than the MY back in 2021 - this is no longer the case!
  4. The Mach E has the driver instrument panel.
  5. The Mach E has Apple CarPlay.
  6. The Mach E doesn't relegate as many functions - even opening the glove box and running wipers - to the touchscreen. And you get the glorious volume/HVAC KNOB!
  7. The Mach E is produced by a company that isn't run by an egomaniac who seems to believe in - gasp - the freedom to share information and opinions online, even if they hurt your feelings. (Just kidding. But seriously, much of this formerly deemed "misinformation" concerning Covid treatment/origins and the Bidens ended up being true, probable, or at least not provably false. Something for the anti-Muskers to consider. And I know, I know, you'll deny that politics plays a role, but we don't believe you.)
Basically, there are only a few reasons to choose the Tesla:
  1. You want to "own a Tesla."
  2. You want better efficiency - not range - to save a few dollars a month in fuel.
  3. You want to save thousands of dollars now over the Mach E.
  4. You do a lot of public fast charging. Teslas charge faster and have a superior charging network.
  5. You like the Tesla software ecosystem. It is very nice and refined in a lot of regards, but takes some getting used to, and you won't get Apple CarPlay.
  6. You want Full Self Driving Beta and are willing to pay an extra $12,500 for it.
I think ##3-6 are legit reasons for choosing the Tesla if those are important to you.

I agree here too. I would even say that the better charging network is soon to be a perk of the past for them after this spring. The faster charging speed are a plus, but I am hopeful that Ford will begin to move the charging curve to let it rip a bit more than it does. Feels like they are easing into it.

But yes, owning a Tesla isn't as "luxury" as people make it seem. The M3 and MY brands are generic vehicles at this point and not premium when you look at the design and quality.

Right? I've never ridden in an S or an X, but I was extremely unimpressed with the interior of the 3 and the Y. They just don't feel premium in any way. Not what I would expect for vehicles at that size/price point. The interior materials have a very Prius feel.

The 3 and the Y feel super budget for the price tag. Not to mention super vanilla. The interior feels very economy car.

Tesla was first to market so they have first mover advantage…doesn’t mean they’re the best.

I’m curious as to everyone’s thoughts on why they chose a Mach-E over a Tesla…

Personally I think Tesla got a lot of things right minus the styling & design. I think they’re bland/boring and everyone and their mother has one.

Why did you buy a Mach-E?
I spent a lot of time on the forums before I bought. It’s hard to filter out noise from signal so you have to whittle down what’s important to you.

For my wife and I:
1. It’s our first EV so the MME tactile controls and buttons was a plus
2. We both really like Apple CarPlay availability
3. This is our around-town driver, so charging network wasn’t a factor
4. I have several Ford dealerships within 20 minutes from me including one just 5 minutes from house. I am ready for issues either way so that’s a plus
5. We’re not overly interested in most self driving features of EVs. For example I won’t pay for Blue Cruise after the promotion for it expires.
6. We like the styling in and out much better. At this price level we HAD to love looking at it. The Y only caught my eye from the rear view and the interior was too spartan for us.
7. MME from all objective reports estimates range more accurately
8. Center display was a must
9. We have loved driving the MME from moment one

We also considered VW ID4 (eliminated very quickly from watching YouTube) and the Kia EV6 (sits too low for us).

Lastly, we had a great buying experience and fair transparent pricing from the dealership which is not the usual experience. Engage with yours and see if they understand that they need to be more like Tesla on that point.

Did anyone mention that the Tesla Y is ugly and you can't see out of the rear window because it's too small?

I also like the option of turning off one-pedal driving. I test drove an S in 2015 and a 3 in 2019 and 1PD was standard. I drove a stick for >30 years, I like to coast ;)

Would you buy another Mach-E when redesigned?

I already bought a 2021, then a year later a 2022 (sold the 2021). Then added a Lightning.

Next EV in 2025 or 2026, replace Mach-E with maybe Explorer EV.

The mid-cycle redesign will be too early. I'm waiting for the next big jump in battery tech (necessary for bolded items below). I'll hang onto my Mach E until I can buy a car that meets the following specs:
  1. Still needs to be a Crossover / SUV form factor. I like the space and sitting a little higher on the road.
  2. Still needs to be stylish inside and out. I will not accept the bubble / blunt-nosed dorkmobile styling, or cheap interiors.
  3. A nice cushy suspension (the Mach E’s “sport tuning” is definitely not this).
  4. Well-insulated, quiet cabin (Mach E is pretty good in this regard).
  5. 350mi+ Range at 75mph.
  6. 15min DCFC from 10% to 90%.
  7. At least 3mi/kWh highway and 4mi/kWh city efficiency.
  8. “Level 2.5” ADAS (Eyes-on but otherwise self-driving on highways, including nav and truly automatic lane changes).
  9. No more than $60k (adjusted for inflation, probably closer to $80k).
I think that is achievable in 5-10 years, but hopefully closer to 5.

Ok, so in a previous post you mentioned not caring about efficiency but in this one you cite it as one of your requirements. Care to expand? Note: I’m not being critical, just trying to understand.
