Well I definitely agree that they should have everything listed in the TSB available and whether it's one or the other or BOTH I guess I don't need to understand why. However, I'm just curious as I like to know what's going on especially if they try to tell me something I know is wrong. It sounds like they are addressing the APIM module and the TCU module and perhaps they need a connection which is different for the two modules. This is above my pay grade and I really don't understand all that is involved.
Everyone here is basing comments and responses based on reading the TSB. In some places it does read like you could use one or the other but the consensus is that if it was one or the other then they would likely not require having all of the adapters. It is expected to be one or both with the FDRS software prompting for the correct adapter(s) depending on errors detected.

We will have more clarity when individuals in this forum go through the process individually; I haven't seen that anyone has done so yet. It may also be possible to learn more as people go through the repair at dealerships depending on feedback from the service departments and possible logs in the vehicle history.

Anyone making a running list of the adapters the service tech needs? I'm buying these, and leaving them on the front seat when I take my car in on Monday. Whatever they don't use, i'll return.

Trendnet USB to Ethernet:

Male-to-male USB 2.0 A cord (10 feet)

USB 2.0 A Female to USB B Mini 5 Pin Female Adapter Converter
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015ORX70S/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=ADQJP9NWIFYM2&psc=1

What else do they need?

Is there a specific error code that we need to receive to be eligible for this? How do we know if we're 'stuck' on 1.7.1, or just haven't gotten to the front of the line for the next update?
Can anyone that's on 1.7.1 take their car in for updates now?

If you go in Settings under System, and look at the Sync Version, if it says "--" you're stuck.

My Job-1 MME has been at the dealer for 3 days, trying to get +18 modules updated for the second time. Just got a text from dealer saying that they are having trouble updating most modules. FDRS keeps kicking them out halfway through the updates. I feel helpless! What makes this worse is that I had to go back a second time for something they should have complete during the warranty. During commute to dealer this second time, a Canadian goose decided to stand on I-95 and collide with my car. I am sure I have 2-3 grand in damages. Do you think Ford will help pay my deductible? @Ford Motor Company
Who should the dealer be contacting for these types of update issues? Please advise!!!!

Just wanted to chime in here that I've had all the necessary hardware since forever (wait, not everyone has it? ?), so if you'd like to skip the dealership and save some time, I'd be happy to perform the TSB for you for the price of um... Coffee? Just to offset my FDRS cost.

Thank you for pointing out the correct Trendnet adapter but I still don't understand if the APIM module will use this Ethernet to USB adapter (Trendnet) or just a USB connection using only the mini 5 pin and the male to male USB cord? It states there are 2 ways to connect the laptop and I would like to know if both are necessary or only one. Sorry I'm not trying to be difficult I just don't understand the procedure.
Ford found that either the APIM and/or the TCU is causing the OTA problem. There is a diagnostic test in FDRS that determines which module is causing the problem. FDRS can communicate with the APIM via a direct USB connection. The TCU is connected to the APIM via an internal single twisted pair Ethernet network. The Ethernet dongle is used by FDRS to communicate with the TCU through the APIM.

I'm doing the same thing. They also technically need an ethernet cable, but those are just everywhere. Tell them to unplug one from one of their desktop computers in the office if they don't have one available :D

April 11, and SSM 50513 scheduled too.

Is it odd that I waited on 50513 (a physical defect in the axle) until the OTA was addressed?
