Oh there was a REAL simple solution for this:Drag. Parasitic drag to be precise. The flush handles are potential mechanical nightmares as well. There are no genuinely good solutions that I can see, but I'm not an engineer or designer so ...
Mechanical key latch next to the tailgate release button on the hatch.
Insert your KEY from the remote into the keyhole on the hatch, and the hatch opens giving a person access to a pull/release wire in the side panel of the trunk to release/open the rear door for access.
Easy, simple. However this costs $$ and the bean counters saved $ but not having to provide owner's with physical keys, a rear hatch mechanical key/lock/latch mechanism, and a mechanical wire/pull release for the rear door to open.
PLENTY of cars have options similar to this for access. It's not a novel thing.
Ford just chose the CHEAP option.
