Okay so it's all in doing the homework while buying the vehicle (funding a good deal)

Nothing much we can do at the time of selling. Got it
And I'm just one person... I have no idea what other people do when they're making decisions about selling or keeping their vehicles. It's so subjective.

Every time I get a new car, I tell myself, "This is the one I'll keep forever!" I even go as far as buying the 8-year, 125,000-mile FordProtect extended warranty. This time will be no different. Realistically, I'll keep it at least 3-5 years. But like others have said, the EV world is changing so rapidly, I'll be anxious to see what the next-gen Mach-E has to offer. Surely I'll stick with Ford no matter what, though!

I am expecting ~10 years. Possibly could consider a Mach E GT PE or other BEV sooner (as in this year) if I don't lose too much besides the delta in MSRP and assuming $7500 tax credit or more again.

Technically it's my wife's car and she normally drives her cars for 10 years. I was debating going with Ford Options since I assume a lot of new tech will come out, but I got really good financing and if we wanted something else later we could just sell.

I tend to buy about as much car as I can afford, and then keep it till it's prohibitively expensive to maintain. I like to do most of the maintenance myself, so I'll likely have the car a long time.

My 2014 mustang had a couple hundred thousand miles on it, and was sporting new struts and shocks, upgraded rear sway bar, new tires, was still fun to drive, and the engine had yet to burn a drop of oil between changes, when that deer decided to jump out in front of me and send me shopping for a Mach E.

Prior to the 2014 I had a 2005 mustang GT that went 320K miles before it finally reached the end of its reasonable wear cycle in 2014.

That said, I didn't see a huge change in technology or features between the '05 and the '14 but holy crap cars have come a long way since 2014.

So, I dunno. I tend not to get rid of a car until my hand is forced. I'm thinking an EV is pretty simple and if lovingly maintained should last a long, long while. But as others have said, this is new technology so things may improve so much in a few years that it'll be hydeously obsolete before I can wear it out.

Yeah, who am I kidding? 10 or 15 years. Tops.

I plan to keep it 4-5 years. Unless something much more advanced comes along that makes me want to trade it.

I generally don't get rid of cars. In the last 25+ years I've only had one car which I leased at the time and turned in (Nissan Altima - new baby was on the way and needed a car quick). Acura Integra 17 years, Saturn Outlook 13 years, Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen (which the aforementioned "new baby" now drives) 8 yrs and counting.

So likely 10+ years, then hand-me-down to daughter #2.

Do you plan to keep your Mach E forever? Or, is it something that you plan to have for 2-3 years until there are more proven electric options (eg Fisker, Rivian, Lucid actually deliver cars)?
So, I'm 78 years old and play for the MME to be my last car. 'Course, I said that about my 2017 Mercedes GLC . . . one friend's father had 4 last cars . . . whatever . . .

I anticipate 24 to 36 months max. There will be a lot of EV innovation and I don't want to get stuck with an obsolete brick.

I too did a 3-year Ford Options financing to keep things open for review. I expect EV technology to advance by leaps & bounds during the next two years. I plan to reevaluate things after two years. The Cadillac Lyriq looks exciting, maybe the 2024 model!

Good to know. I spoke to my "tax guy" and he said that I would need to be careful if I bought more than one and sold them right away.

Like I said before, I am only going to keep one of the cars but like you said, it would be advisable to keep it for more than a day.

I may end up keeping the MME anyway.

The main concern I have is Winter Range for the battery.

I guess I will find out what happens here shortly.
It’s called “tax fraud.”

Your tax guy is just telling you how to be more likely to get away with it. It’s still fraud though. Buy it if you plan on keeping it.

If you plan on reselling it right away, don’t claim the $7,500.

I plan on keeping it and eventually selling it.

I have now memorialized it with this post.

I actually think I could sell it the same day I purchased it but under more consideration, I am not. I am going to keep if for a while.

I have purchased more than 50 cars in my lifetime and I have sold them all. Some of them, I sold right away. Now if I were to buy 5 MME's and sell them all right away and claim all of the credits, that could be viewed as possible tax fraud. If I buy one, and I don't like the ride, don't like the range, don't care for the color. You get the point. I wasn't able to test drive an MME from the dealer I purchased it from. Who knows, I may not like the ride.

Just like you were baiting me to find a case study, please enlighten me on the length of time that I need to keep said car before I forfeit the tax credit?

I am not purchasing it for the sole purpose of gaining a tax credit. I did however, tip my persuasion to the MME over the Tesla mainly for said tax credit. (just like many of the forum members I am sure)

Like I said, I might end up keeping it and selling the Prius instead. I don't know and I really don't care at this point. I am not too worried. If I were to hedge my bets, I will most likely end up keeping the Prius though and selling the MME.

I have checked it all out and I am going to rest assure knowing that I am going to end up with the car I like the most and makes the most sense for my business and claim the tax credit no matter what car I keep.

Let me guess, you took the tax credit knowing that you are going to sell it. Are you worried?

We will all sell our cars at some point. I am going to take the tax credit and sell the MME at some point. When, I don't know, but at some point it will be long gone. I am not buying and selling cars for a business. I am not a "dealer". I am merely a consumer that goes for good deals and this just happens to be a good deal my friend.:)

“The vehicles must be acquired for use or lease and not for resale.”

You clearly stated on an earlier post you want to buy it to resell immediately at a profit.

Pretty cut and dry case. Feel free to call the IRS if you need more clarification. They have an 800 number.

If the tax credits still exist, I will advertise the MME for at least MSRP before I actually physically have it. Once again, it could possibly be the same day I take delivery and I have a buyer.
Lol I mean seriously?

I stated that I may have it for one day. You are correct. I don't think that would be possible though.

The most likely scenario is that I keep it for at least a month. The Title would need to be sent to the DMV and that takes up to 3 weeks in some cases.

I will have it and drive it for a month (at least), and then if I don't like it, I am dropping it like a bad habit.

So in correction of my original post, I would say at least a month. After that, I will either have an MME in my Driving School or another Prius. The MME would have the "cool" factor but the Prius may be more practical for the range.

Like I said, I will wait and see.

Did you ever find the "forfeit" clause? :p
