What will really blow your mind is pre-pandemic models you can wave your foot under the trunk and it will close.

THREE WAYS TO CLOSE IT
As pointed out, the mme entered production very late in Q3 2020. First delivery was a hairs width before New Year’s Day 2021. There were no Mach-es built before the pandemic.

The greater concern should be the decontenting of the cars in general. My car has 4 ways on the car alone to close the hatch: center button (This is what I use, I’m a bit above 6 ft so the height is not an issue), lit offset button on the hatch, kick to close, and the screen button. Plus you have FordPass options.

I might add though that kick to open on my car is very haphazard. If my PAAK phone isn’t in just the right location (not a back pocket), you can kick all day and it won’t open).

Well dogs I trust. Sort of, a bit, occasionally anyway. But that @markboris hooman making button in the car? That’s suspect. I’ll change my mind if he brings me appropriate bribes — I mean tribute. ;)

I ordered that rear illuminated liftgate button yesterday and will be installing back in my '24. Also installing one in a friend's in AZ. Both of us like having an illuminated button back there and neither of us are tall. While my '21 had the kick to open, along with my 2014 Escape having one, I have that feature turned off. There are many posts on the Escape forum and a few here with it opening up when no one around damaging the liftgate. I know it is very rare but I don't need that issue.

lol.... I also find it quite interesting that Ford found it necessary to dedicate a physical button to navigate to parking..... I would have loved to have sat in on that meeting.... ?
You might want to spend some time reading through the forum. This is discussed ad nauseum. The Park Assist feature worked in 2021 and into 2022. Then due to pandemic it was disabled, but hardware existed, and FORScan could turn it on. Then, in 2023, hardware was removed and it just does that function you found. In 2025 they are redoing the console, moving the shifter, maybe the button is gone.

Good point. I park outside and have not walked up to the car in the morning with the lift gate open. I have been standing near the car and watched it open on its own though. I probably should have turned mine off when I saw that but it’s only been the one time. ?‍♂?

Well technically they repurposed an existing button rendered useless by a parts shortage. But yeah.

I use kick to open all the time, but normally the lit button to close. I never thought to try kick to close. Thanks, I'll give it a go!

I have used Parking Assist exactly once, to see if it worked. THAT is some de-content that I will not miss in the future.

I think they are keeping it for whatever reason I have no idea.

I don't think I've heard of this before and find it very interesting. I've read of numerous people who say the kick-to-open doesn't work well for them, but for me, it works flawlessly.

Perhaps using a fob exclusively (as I do) contributes to that feature working more dependably?

It’s more a matter of where your key-like device is in relationship to the antenna or sensors that allow the kick-to-open feature to work. I think they’re overly sensitive in that regard.

ATM I’m driving the dealer’s FCTP mme. I usually keep the fob in my front left pocket and kick with my left leg. That mostly works. I keep my iPhone 15 ProMax in my right rear pocket. That usually doesn’t work on my car. It works better if I have it in a shirt pocket. Honestly though I almost always just push the button on the hatch or use the Apple Watch buttons.

The difference for me in comparison to others is that I walk with a definite limp and usually use a grocery cart to bring groceries to the car. My hands are free to do that stuff, others folks don’t have free hands.

Fob has a way better range to the sensor than PAAK does. Phones using a low powered near range only Bluetooth connection are easily blocked by any part of the water filled sack that we humans are. When I carry a fob, it’s great. When I don’t I have to make sure I’m super close, move the phone from my back pocket. And wait for the phone to connect to the car… then kick.

Not built nor delivered before the pandemic, but certainly designed with parts ordered/procured before the lockdowns impacted supplies. I think we can accept a little bit of poetic license in referring to Job 1 as 'pre-pandemic'.

Could be. But I never carry a key, always use the phone only, and the kick works great for me. Someone here advised kicking under the left edge of the license plate (rather than the center of the plate) and I think that helped. I do keep my phone in a side pocket, not a back pocket, so there's that too.

All auto manufacturers, both pre pandemic and into the pandemic, practiced just in time parts procurement and delivery. This minimized warehousing and associated costs. It was a flaw when supply issues emerged during the pandemic. Currently, many manufacturers (in general) are preordering parts and stockpiling as many as they can afford and get in anticipation of additional tariffs. Aircraft out of China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Malaysia are chock full.
