I’m curious as to everyone’s thoughts on why they chose a Mach-E over a Tesla…

Personally I think Tesla got a lot of things right minus the styling & design. I think they’re bland/boring and everyone and their mother has one.

Why did you buy a Mach-E?

Note - Have a Model 3 in the home already and was shopping for a second car.

I went with the Mach E because I loved the styling, driving, interior quality over a Tesla. I've had a lot of build quality issues with the 3. However for me, the biggest factor was everyone including all neighbors around me have a Tesla and it feels like we're back to the Camry days but only worse.

Overall, I'm happy with the purchase so far. In terms of cons, the only 2 I've faced are the lack of supercharging (for now and should be fixed by 2024) and the touchscreen could be more responsive (which honestly isn't that big a deal since you rarely interact with it outside of a few things).

in order of most to least important, some of which no longer apply
  1. musk's control of the company is an ethical risk to me, which is a personal opinion. however, it is also objectively a business risk when one person (particularly one of this personality) has so much control. it risks the brand's reputation, long term viability, etc for a company that has not stood the test of time in the first place
  2. no carplay/android auto
  3. build quality concerns. i'm told this has gotten better, though i'm still not a fan of the touch and feel, maybe gets into #5
  4. no dash display and the only screen is horizontal which i believe is the wrong orientation
  5. design is not my style, not only aesthetically but often different from ICE for virtually no reason. i wanted to be able to switch back and forth between ICE and EV with ease and not get into an accident because i forgot which one i was in
  6. mach e was cheaper than model y [retrospect: i think this is no longer true at the current rebate situation, i bought in 2021 where the y cost 10k-15k more]
  7. servicing concerns (proximity of servicing centers, lack of appointment availability). [retrospect: my experience w/ ford servicing has been extremely poor. tons of dealers but all the ones near me are shady and inexperienced. with full hindsight i would not consider this an advantage for ford anymore]
overall i'd strongly consider the tesla Y if i were shopping today with full knowledge of what i know now. i don't think it'd pay extra $ for the mach e based on any of the above, so would have to make the economics work

I think it's the same reason why someone might have chosen a Fusion over an Accord, or a Camry over a Malibu. Looks/styling, (perceived) quality, dealer network(!), ergonomic preference, colour availability, etc.

I wanted a Model 3 until I found out they have no instrument cluster. I was willing to overlook some of the paint and gap issues, but the lack of a gauge cluster and no available HUD (even aftermarket) is a huge fail in my book (it might not be in yours). I couldn’t find anything else remotely affordable that I liked until the MME was announced. ?‍♂?

We wanted an electric crossover and chose between the Y and MME. D-plan and tax rebate made the MME much less expensive at the time of our purchase, so much so that it was a better value at that time.

I'd already had a Tesla, and wasn't going to be able to get a "better" one, so that ruled out a Tesla. Nothing else electric was going to be available in time for my needs, so Mach e won out over the competition at the time.

Why did you buy a Mach-E?
Isn't owning a car about styling and design? And performance?

And not buying from Musk?

Coming from a Ford ICE, the Mach-E felt similar and I hated the Y interior when I test drove it. No driver side instrument cluster and the track ball mirror adjustment was a non starter

1) I would rather limit how much money I give to Elon Musk, as long as there are decent alternatives.
2) I like having a driver specific display, physical buttons that control things, and other more familiar qualities coming from. ICE vehicles..
3) I need a good parking assist due to a crowded garage and parking lots with relatively small spaces full of relatively large vehicles. Tesla dropped ultrasonic sensors abruptly last fall, before implementing functional vision-based parking assist, and it's still not as good as with USS.
4) I worry about what else will abruptly be changed or disabled, like dropping the USS. I don't trust Elon Musk, and worry what he might demand to be changed on a whim.
5) the nearest physical Tesla service department is 2 states away in Massachusetts, while I am in central Maine. That's really far if they need to physically look at or fix something.
6) I like the Ford driver monitoring. I know not everyone does, but I think it's more likely to keep me safer.

I have a friend who has a Model Y and loved it. I know it has better thermal regulation, a better app, a good towing capacity (something I kind of wanted), and the Supercharger network is excellent for road tripping. I felt the Mach-E is just as good (better in some ways, worse in others), so I felt I would rather give my money to Ford than Tesla and Elon Musk.

Oh, and the Mustang Mach-E is a much cuter car than the Model Y. So many ponies!

I had pretty much decided to get a M3 Performance, then Mach e won a ton of awards in early 2022 and I learned that it was eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit and the M3 wasn’t. Both of these details are historical at this point. Mach e isn’t winning awards these days and tax credits have all changed. That said, once I did more research, the list of MME benefits grew. @flapjake314 captured most of them above. I’m very glad I chose the MME over M3.
