Since you're asking for tips to increase range when driving on the highway there are probably only two ways. Turn off the HVAC and reduce speed.

I'm saying the the starting range is inaccurate. I'm simply asking for tips on highway driving not smart a$$ remarks. :D This was my first trip. I thought the Forum would be helpful? ?
I sympathize. unfortunately the predicted range will never be 100% accurate because it depends on so many factors, and that makes planning long trips a bit difficult.

Really the only thing you can do to significantly increase your range is to drive slower. Lower speed = less drag = more efficient.

One more tip I've found useful is to keep a steady speed on the freeway. Find a speed around 70-75, turn on your cruise control, let it keep you at that speed, and enjoy the ride. Passing other vehicles on the freeway sucks energy out of your battery very, very quickly.

Always best to start your first long drip at 100% if possible. That way you can watch the percentage gauge and note the miles traveled every 10% of energy used. Sometimes that first 10% is misleading because you are still trying to get out of town so it might be as high as 30 miles for example (assuming ER battery). But leaving Quartzsite is immediate interstate if I remember correctly so you should know pretty quick what your total range actually is after your first 10% of charge is consumed. Let's say you left Quartzsite at 65% and by 55% you had only traveled about 20 miles. Then you know you might want to slow down or turn off the heater to conserve energy so you can comfortably make it the remaining distance.

Does this make sense at all? It always sounds so simple in my head but I think I am the only person who does this. Everybody else wants to use apps, or the navigation or watch the miles per kWh meter or stuff like that. I don't really find any of that stuff very useful. For me, I want real time figures and the best way for me to do that is to watch the percentage gauge and my odometer (or trip odometer if that makes it easier to do the math.

EDIT: Add about 0.3 to all my numbers below if you’ve got a RWD model. My numbers are based on my AWD Extended.

Man, numbers are all over the board here. I am highly skeptical of anyone claiming to get better than 3mi/kWh at 75mph+. Maybe with optimal temp, no HVAC, no passengers, and a massive tailwind, but that is not realistic.

2.5mi/kWh is more realistic at highway speeds, but you can count on that dropping to 2 or even lower if the battery is cold, you're carrying a lot of extra weight, or you're driving into a headwind. Welcome to the joys of road-tripping with the MME. This is the cost of driving a car that isn't shaped like a dorkmobile.

ok, so speed was your factor here my friend. My range drops significantly higher than 75. I set the cruise at about 73 and let others pass me. Air resistance at higher speeds will suck your battery down fast. Going 65 greatly increases my range if I have a large highway gap to cover without charging.

Going for a helpful response here....

Aero drag does indeed increase with the square of speed.
The best publicly available data for how the Mach-E behaves across a range of speeds is from the EPA fuel economy data, which actually includes a load function vs speed. I used that formula to create the table below, which shows roughly how much your range will decrease with faster speeds. Obviously this is only an approximation, and the numbers would change significantly with cold weather, wind, etc.

I get over 3 mi/kwh in the summer in my CR1 consistently (at 80mph to boot).

In winter its in the 2s.

Don't believe me? I don't care and will continue to happily drive the car.

I understand. Tell me, how would the car know that you were going to be driving on the highway that day? This is why you use the Ford Nav on the screen to plan your trip and it would have given you an accurate State of charge for the trip.

I was using the Ford Nav
The Nav is going to assume you will drive the speed limit. 75 mph max for that stretch of road. if you plan to drive faster then throw the range estimate out the window and expect it to be much less. Range drops drastically the faster you drive. Lots of EV drivers drive fast....they just account for the lower range when they plan their trips.

Your range will vary depending on temperature, terrain, elevation and speed. I live in Florida. When the temps are 65 or higher I can average 3 miles per kWh with cruise control set at 75 and the HVAC set at 72 in my Select.

holy crap, the only way for our Select to manage 3.4 mile/KWh is to drive 65. At 75 it’s down to 2.5.
We drive PA turnpike at 65 mph with posted speed at 70. Glad we both do since deer collisions were very close especially at nite. We avg 3.5kwh vs 2.8kwh and the extra mileage is worth it vs getting theeee a few minutes earlier.
