If I have them, I would always use trim tools to gently unsnap each fastener one at a time. Some have lost fasteners and even broken the panels by handling them too roughly. In a bad situation out in a parking lot, do what you need to do. Otherwise, consider some type of pry type plastic trim tools to more carefully unsnap the two panels. I keep two trim tools wrapped in a microfiber cloth in the one side of the divider that I left in (along with the jump pack and 10mm socket, extender and handle, for lifting the 12V ground terminal for electrical work or a cold boot).
For jumping you only need to remove the rear and left luggage compartment covers. Trim tools help.

I purchased the plastic trim tools but have never used them. To remove the two covers I assume you pry the the cover at the point in the diagram that shows a clip. Is it just a leverage type of motion to lift the cover and dislodge the clip? The kit has a tool that looks like it could pry something.

I had enough free time over the weekend (before my own car woes) to try and pop off the panels in order to drill out access points to the jump terminals (see https://www.macheforum.com/site/threads/how-to-add-access-ports-for-lvb-connection-points.4107/)

I did indeed use a trim removal tool, and while none broke, one clip still forcefully shot loose when I removed a panel and dropped into the guts below. I figure it's nonconductive and there are no open parts below (I don't think) but still, pretty annoying.

So I looked up trim tools on Amazon and saw MANY, including sets of hundreds of trim tools. Can anyone tell me what tool is actually useful for taking out the two trim panels needed to access the MME 12v battery? TIA!

I believe it's just supposed to be your hands?
To me, that's what it seems to say in the manual.

James May recently posted a video on YouTube about the 12V battery in his Model S dying.

At least it is way easier to get at the 12V battery in the Mach-E then that Model S. Looks like the 12V drain issue is still plaguing some Tesla owners. I had assumed that Tesla has fixed the issue on their cars. Or maybe May has not updated his Model S since he got it (I doubt that).

I haven't read through all 44 pages of this thread, but just wanted to share my experience. We left the car at home for four nights while we were out of town. It was in our garage in California, so the lowest temperature it could have experienced was probably 65 F. The car was plugged in to the Level 2 charger the entire time. When we got home, the 12v battery was dead, and the car was inaccessible.

Thanks to the help of this thread, I hooked up a jump-starter battery pack to pop the hood, then to the terminals under the left panel in the frunk, and got the car started.

The dealer performed "TSB 21-2091 and reprogrammed PCM - powertrain control module and secondary on board diagnostic module as well as the battery electric control module and the ABS module - re-tested all and verified repair vehicle now starting and operating as designed."

I just picked it up from the service department this afternoon, so hopefully that fixed the problem.

In any case, I still love this car. :) I had no delusions that a brand new platform would be bug-free, so it's not a big deal for me. I'm often an "early-adopter" with a lot of tech stuff because I enjoy it, bugs and all, and this car is no different. Anyway, I hope this information helps anyone else who finds themselves with a dead 12v battery.

I think it was around the first week of February. Is there a way to check the build date?
Either on the window sticker, with your VIN and the tracker on this site, or on the door sill.

I'm about to leave my Mach E at home for a week while we're away, I'm wondering if I should leave the car plugged in the whole time or just unplugged sitting there? What say you all?

My MME has sat at different times for a week unplugged during ownership, no issues at all.

How much "phantom drain" did you end up seeing?
Not much, so little it’s a non issue. Maybe 1% at most, parked at 90% came back to 89% or 88%. Also depends on weather when colder out, but the drain issue has been fixed in an update for the early ones like mine. I’ve actually just got it updated again a few weeks ago while getting my second FOB programmed.
